Any Framers In Alberta Looking For Carpenters.
Hey guys,
I am debating going to Alberta for a while and go to work with a framing crew. I am only young 21 years old. I do have some experience. I know how to lay out walls, set trusses (have done this on additions). I havent cut any stair stringers yet but know the principal behind how they are cut. I think it would be a great benifit for me as it would help me learn the trade. And I could also be a great benifit to whichever company I work for as I dont mind working if I am being paid well. I wouldnt consider myself a carpenter as I have no experience reading plans. I will be building 2 houses with my brother in the next month or so (he is a carpenter) and I plan to get a lesson or 2 from him on reading plans. So to you guys in Alberta who are framers what would you think (from what I have said above) I would be worth an hour ??? I have read about guys on here who were paying people straight out of highschool $18 an hour and not being able to keep them. |

$18/hr? They're paying that at the Tim Hortons out there now aren't they? Not a cheap province to live in these days.

I've heard of them paying $12.00/hr at Tim's ...not $18.00.... except maybe in Ft McMurray. But you are right it's not a cheap place to live out here!!!! Rents are really high... that is if you can find one vacant.

Re: Any Framers In Alberta Looking For Carpenters.
Think twice about coming out here. Work has really slowed down. I know some guys from Ontario have packed up and gone home. Seems this province is really hot or not so hot. House have reached a price that is unaffordable for the average guy. I was talking to the plumbing super today and he said it's so slow that he has to go back on the tools or look for something else. Not enough work to supervise. Having said that , your still young and it would be quite an experience for you. As for wage you would be looking in the $12-14 to start. If you bust you buns most guys will move you up Iknow I do. I run 2 crews currently in the Calgary area and if your serious let me know.
