Wrap Around Stairs
I just can't picture how to run the stringers for wrap-around stairs
There's none around here for me to look under Does anybody have any links to pics or plans that shows how they go? Thanks in advance for any info |

Re: Wrap Around StairsQuote:
If so, you're stringers would basically just be cutting the joined angles in half at the meeting-point. If it's a square or rectangular deck, - - your end-stringers would extend out from the corners at 45 degree angles, - - if your deck-corners are a 45 degree angle, - - your end-stringers would extend out at 22 1/2 degree angles, - - etc.

Re: Wrap Around Stairs
Thanks for the reply
It is rectangular, about 4x8 The stairs would go along one of the short sides and half the long side, and meet at a 45* angle on the corner Would that be called perimeter stairs? Just run that stringer out at a 45? How do I figure out how to cut the steps on that stringer? Last edited by slickshift; 08-06-2005 at 05:52 PM. |

Re: Wrap Around StairsQuote:
Hmmm...not sure how to describe this now OK, it's 4 x 8, with 8 feet against the house Pretty small right? If I am looking at the house, the left side of the deck has a top step that runs the whole length of the left 4 foot side, comes around to the front, and goes for 4 feet along the left side of the 8 foot front So it runs along a 4 x 4 section of the deck The next lower step also runs along the entire left side, comes around to the front, and goes for the four feet of deck The third step from the top does the same thing, etc....for six steps These steps meet at the left corner (away from the house) at a 45* angle As we go down the steps, the actual length of the boards I cut at a 45 increases (If they didn't meet at a 45 and wrap around the deck, they would stay the same) Now here's the thing I can't figure Almost all the stringers will have the same dimensions Theoretically I could go to Big Orange and get pre cut stringers and be done with it But, there's that one stringer, the 45* one If I use the pre cut stringer, it won't work The steps are cut at a 45* angle and their width at the cut is greater than the 90* cut on the other ends The pre-cut stringer is too small in the step area It also looks bad, the tread is not flush with the riser part of the stringer There's a little triangle in there How do I figure out how to cut that 45* stringer so the tread fits and it looks good? |

Re: Wrap Around Stairs
Pythagorean Theorum, - -
A(2) + B(2) = C(2) Let's say your 'straight' stringers have 11" treads, - - 11(2) = 121 121 + 121 = 242 Square root of 242 = approximately 15 1/2" So 15 1/2" would be the tread length of your corner stringer. The 'rise', of course, stays the same.

Re: Wrap Around Stairs
Oh, and you're right, 'wrap-around' steps may be the better name, - - perimeter steps usually go all the way around all sides of the deck.

Re: Wrap Around Stairs
I had an 11th grade English teacher that was the same. I had attended English schools and my command of the English language was better than hers but I learned American to impress her.
By coincidence, I met her many years later. She was still a dish and I was married to Ol'#1. Another fantasy not meant to be.
