Wood Over Concrete Steps
I have a customer that has a set of solid concrete steps going into the front door of their house. The platform is 4x4' with the top of the platform being the second step. Is there a simple way to build a new set of stairs here without having to remove the concrete ones? I have plenty of room to go bigger ie 6'x6' they want all the surface to be composite. I know ive seen this done before, not sure of the merits of using some sort of sleeper system. They also have an Extra high step between the top of the platform and door sill, so I have room to go up some.

Re: Wood Over Concrete Steps
yes, you can flank the stoop with stringers, set the tread 1.5'' above the concrete, 2x sleeper on the flat, 16oc, thats one way

Re: Wood Over Concrete Steps
The only way I see it, is if you can go up high enough for each new wood tread to be able to independently float over the existing concrete treads. You can cut two new outside stringers. but you will still have to fasten a couple of sleepers to the existing concrete treads, as composite will not span very far.

Re: Wood Over Concrete Steps
I did something similar around christmas last year. Demoed the stoop in under 3 hours with one man working an electric jackhammer & another loading into the trailer. It's much better imo to have the stoop gone than sleepers because even composites need ventilation.
