Who Knows About Chain Link Fences?

How big of a deal is it to put a gate in an existing chain link fence that currently has no gate? Is it as simple as cutting out the section, adding two posts, and restretching?

My neighbors and I are the best of friends and our kids currently hop yard to yard by using my little giant ladder that I set up over the fence and it's getting old. A gate would be better.

Not looking to DIY, just an approximate feel for cost so I don't have to waste another professional's time for a FREE estimate on a job we are not 100% on doing. What's good for the goose...

depending on the height of the fence and the size of width of gate you want i would say about $500-600 for a 4' wide gate in a 4' high fence material and labour. you may save a bit buy putting the gate next to an existing terminal post if possible.

Put in your posts first and attach the fence before you cut, then you won't need to re-stretch.

Greg, you should be able to install a gate in the existing chain link, no problem. But if you were going to hire someone, $450-700 should get it done.

Greg exactly as you describe, Some one suggested setting post and not cutting fence till attached, sorry whoever, that doesn't make any sense, its not how its done, besides you could use the leftover to wire your gate. You could also convert a line post into a latch post, Just sleeve with a taller post and turn it into a terminal, leaves only one post to set.
Job like that could run around $400-500, depends on the companies minimum labor charge, its only an hour or so, set and stretch same day. Materials are probably around $100-125 (using old wire).

There's a lot of hardware involved in one gate install. It's fairly easy for a company that does it because they have all of it. They'll weld up the gate and swing it.

Probably 4 hours to do the gate and 6 hours (in two trips) to make it happen.

I did it as a summer job for two years on the NYS Thruway. Ugh! Those 50' rolls of 8 foot fence are killers!

Dont cut the wire. Its only a small job but there are still two visits involved. 1-sets post or posts, 2- next day reassemble and install gate. Most building supply stores will have all the parts you need to do it. Dont cut the wire, lol

To all the Einsteins, how are you going to set a terminal level with the top rail in the way,the terminal is set a few inches higher? You can't in must be moved, and once its removed the wire looses tension therefore it needs to be re stretched. This is not 2 trips, two hour job at most why come all the way back for such a small job.Anybody ever set and stretch same day? once its all hooked plumb post up and let it set for a day or so.

I'll be willing to bet that if you call a fence company, you're looking at the better part of $800 or more in NJ.

not sure how you are going to stretch wire to a post sitting in wet concrete?you must be bracing the post some how till the concrete sets.

You could, provided the existing fence has a continuous top rail. You would need to add a bottom rail at the terminal post to the line post as well. Most likely there is a tension wire at the bottom. If so, that would also need to be re-streched.

No one mentioned that fully assembled gates of different sizes are available for a modest price at the home improvement stores. DIY.

No ,no need for bracing, once the post is locked into the ground and top rail, its becomes "braced" by those means.
