White treated SYP

About a year ago (maybe more) a few of the local lumber yards switched from green treated southern yellow pine to what appears at first glance to be white wood but has the same concentration of chemical preservative.

Home Depot switched too, Lowe's is still carrying the green treated. We started buying #1 grade treated ACQ and the only place stocking it here sells the white treated wood.

I am sure I just need to get past the thought that ACQ should look somewhat green but has anyone heard of an explanation? One lumber supplier told me everyone will be using this white treated before long but I doubt that would satisfy a customer who may ask.

Here is the traditional treated #2 we have been buying:

And this is the fairly new white treated #1 we have started buying:

Eventually most SYP treaters
will switch, it is less corrosive,
and therefore, not as hard on
their equipment.

In my part of the world, ACQ
is now mostly a special order
item.
Be very careful too, as .40 & .60
ground contact isn't as easy to
come by either...you have to
read the flippin' end tags!

WTF is "whitewood"?
I see that in box store ads,
but I've never seen a "whitewood tree."

White wood

I will check the tag on tomorrows order ... is all treated lumber done with this Osmose MicroPro chemical?

So far we are the only dock builder I know of using this #1 grade "whiter" lumber. I am confident the grade quality will help sell a few more but so will pitching it as an Environmentally Preferable Product. One neat fact on the link you sent is they are making this lumber with "MicroShades® - Innovative micronized pigment color choices. Pressure treated wood colors similar to redwood and cedar". That could get interesting.

We refer to white wood as untreated wood. Probably better find another way to describe it now ... what do you call wood with no preservative?

Depends on what kind
of wood it is.

Back east we mostly get SYP
as treated lumber, and that is
also the premier structural lumber
for joist and headers, etc.
Southern
Yellow
Pine

Studs are mostly SPF,
one of, or a mixture of
spruce, pine, and fir
(precious little fir).
And so on, different species
have different qualities, and therefore
different uses.

And our west coast
(probably yours too)
gets treated fir.
It depends on the area.
The OP's stuff looks like SYP.
I can't get anything but SYP
in treated, unless it's like
telephone poles.....

White wood= anything thats cheep. Hemlock, cottonwood, white pine, just about anything that has a lot of sapwood. Usually its a fence grade.

This doesent suprise me it was just a matter of time before all the grades get into the mix. Quality has gone completley past going to hell. J.

casey, since you don't seem to
take my subtle hint, where are you?

And can you re-size the pix?
We don't all have 27" monitors.

In shallow water we auger or use a water jet depending on the soil. Over 24" of water we use a barge mounted Hydraulic post driver. Lots of fun in the summer when all the rich kids are wakeboarding.
