Where To Put The Pergola And Other Questions

Hi all, my beloved is building us a deck ( floating is what I think you refer to it as.....not attached to the house) and since it's on the south side of the house I want a pergola or no one will sit out there during the summer. We're going to be using a pre-fab glass rail system. My beloved was going to put the railing in to the corners of the deck and then put the pergola posts inside of it. I think that the pergola posts should be part of the railing system. Hope I'm explaining this right. I've attached some pictures, the retaining wall goes around the well and we're allowing access within the deck top to the well. The pergola posts will go no further than the corner of the house. The porch that was re-built a few years ago will get a coat of white paint....the pergola will be white as well, pre-fab railing system will also be white, floor will be treated but probably not painted....but who knows.

Having looked at the pictures again since posting maybe the pergola should come out past the house to the middle porch post. Still enough room, I think, to not have the pergola peaking up over the porch roof.

So my question, again, is....pergola posts as part of the railing or sitting inside of the railing?

Edited to add that the deck will be 14 x16 and is going from the outside corner of the porch (where downspot is) to the chimney and out to the outside edge of the retaining wall. For the curious ones we just had the stone work done in May and plan to plant a good two to three feet of some wonderful plant, probably lillies all the way across, then have a 3ft wide path of cedar mulch and then fill in the rest of the area with sumac for privacy. Hopefully putting the path in will draw people down to the pool that way instead of down the rocks.

Thanks
Mary
