Where Deck And Pool Meet

Got one I haven't come across before ....
Customer wants deck around pool but wants deck boards to overlap top rail of pool leaving enough room to pull his pool cover on for winter ...
Will be using Azek / Procell ... Top rail of pool is 10" wide ...
Looking for ideas ...
Thanks in advance
John

Umm,
#1. Can't happen. Sorry.
#2. Install an aluminum (protected from the ACQ lumber) bracket/"L" from framing over the pool edge, then install decking over that.

Pick one.

Bracket might work ... May have to use something heavier than aluminum ...
Hmmmmmm ....

Thanks

Re: Where Deck And Pool Meet

  • I did this one in PT last year. I put 3 extra posts near the pool and "funked" my framing around the pool to keep it close. Hung the boards over the framing and pool edge a few inches. I then made a template out of a refigerator box and cut the ends with a jig saw. Run a round over bit over it to finish it. I think I gave him an 1 1/2" above the pool, but not sure. Iguess it worked out for him. He said it would and I didn't hear anything.

Is this deck floating or deep enough to avoid frost heave if you get that? If it ain't your pool and deck will 'meet' in the future and it won't be pretty.

With above ground pools I tuck the decking under the copeing, install flip up countersunk loops in the decking for the pool cover. J.

Looks great ... I proposed something similar in the beginning, but my customer wants it to overlap the entire top frame of the pool so you would not see any aluminum ...
One way I was considering was to notch the joists to hang over pool then box the end with matching trim board ... If I use a 2" x 10" joist I should be able to make the notch leaving the equivalent of a 2" x 4" I think (?)
It's an oval pool with the deck surrounding 1 end and 1 side ...

The deck posts will be on 12" diameter footings 5ft deep ...
Yeah I know it sounds excessively deep, but that's what our building inspector madates for all deck footings ...

One thing if the Wallet ever has to replace the liner the top rail/copeing will usually have to come off. With the decking extended over the rail its a real pain or impossible to do this. J.

I met with him yesterday and he had just realized that same thing ... Now just running deck boards butt end to the pool and following the radius aprrox 1" back from pool rail ...

Thanks for ideas and listening ...

Re: Where Deck And Pool Meet

I have done a couple of decks over the top of the rails of an above ground pool.

We are in CA so we don't have to worry about freeze. That helps but you should be able to use the same technique where ever you are. We frame the joists tight against the pool rails. We use a starburst or a herringbone pattern when laying the decking so we always have deck boards running perpendicular or at a 45 degree angle to the rails. This allows us to let the deck boards cantalever over.

If the client doesn't like the end grain sticking out over the rails we custom mill a cap that runs over the ends and we curve it around to match the rails. The cap really adds a nice look and the milling isn't too bad so the client loves it and we can charge a pretty fair premium for the it with a nice profit margin.

This works great with wood but I haven't found any composites that are stiff enough.
