NOT A BRANDNAME
Exactly who classified those as ironwood? Some lumber company looking for a good marketing ploy?

John is right & you are wrong. Ipe is the name of tree that grows in South America. The wood that comes from that tree is called ipe just like pine comes from pine trees, walnut comes from walnut trees, ect. ect. Haven't ever heard of ironwood trees.

So deck pawn you think 3400 sq. ft. is big? Try on 10,000 sq. ft. for size, done in a month. No idea of total cost cause it was a commercial project I did for a GC. I do know that I made 34K that month tho. Check it out sometime, Central Market on N. Lamar.

BTW Framerman, thanks for posting that video, hilarious.

Re: Whats The Most Expensive Deck You've Built

Deckman, ironwood is the common
name (here in the midwest) for
American Hop-hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana).
When I saw marketers using that
name it threw me.
It's a pretty common tree in these parts
but never saw anyone falling all over
themselves to log it.

Re: Whats The Most Expensive Deck You've Built

The most expensive deck I have ever built was about 3000 sf of Ipe (ironwood, pau lupe, etc etc etc ). The deck was on 4 levels and had two cedar shake covered sections. The deck was already there but was completely rotted.

We removed the entire structure (except the roofs of the pavillion and gazebo) and rebuilt from ground up. Both the pavillion roof and gazebo roof had stained glass at the top. What a pain in the arse to remove the entire structure and rebuild without cracking the glass. I have a couple pics in our "outdoor living" photo album.

The project cost just under $150,000 by the time we finished. It was the very first time I had built an Ipe deck - talk about on the job training.

O.K. class of the undereducated, get out your pens!
1st. There is no such tree as an Ipe tree ( check with the National forestry) the Tree where Ipe comes from is the " pink -flowered South American Trumpet Tree" or 0r Pua d' arco ( Tabebuia avellanedae) a member of the Bignonia Family (Bignoniaceae). This spicies is often listed as T. ipe or T.ipetiginosa(. and is commonly grown in Southern California
for it's showy cluster of pink blossoms)
2nd. You are wrong about Ironwood, There is a company using the name as product but it is indeed a classification, for a wood to be consicered an Ironwood it has to meet specific gravities between 1.11 and 1.37 ( A numerical scale based on 1.0 for pure water) to get this you calculate this by dividing it's density by ( in grams per cubic cemtimeter) by the density of pure water ( one gram per cubic centimeter).
3rd. There are more then one hundred species of trees commonly named Ironwoods. For example South American Ironwoods are refered to as "quebracho" which translates to "Axe Breaker"
4th. Go to http:// waynesworld.polmar.edu/plsept99.htm.

I will wait for your reports. they are due tommarow, and they should all start with " Hail to the king"........ o.k. maybe thats over the top.

Thanks! We did not get to use the pool since it was February when we finished up. These photos were taken a couple of months later. While we were doing the coping on the pool (it was very difficult to bend 5/4" Ipe around the inside of the pool) we dropped a piece and learned rather quickly that Ipe does not float.

The lower level is above great. The downhill side of the pool was about 4-5' above grade and the lake you see in the background was about another 30-40' downhill. I tried to get the owner to remove the 2 ugly pine trees but he made us go around them.

While I don't deserve the honor
of being placed on a list with you,
Mac, and Deckman, I have to wonder
why he left out Greg and Robert?

Re: Whats The Most Expensive Deck You've Built

This is the all around most everything deck I've ever done. The owner also owned Universal Supply Co. and Patriot Window Manufacturing Co. which have both since been sold. I had a labor only contract on this. It was stripped of 2x4 clear cedar, restructured in some areas and covered with Ipe with deckmaster HFS.
