What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

for a porch or pole building construction where the posts are sunk 36" into the earth, what is code for filling them? My county adopts most of the standard IRC regulations and I have a packet with all of the particular variances.

Re: What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

although I'm not an advocate for burying posts, there are certain situations where the additional latteral support gained by burying is warrented. I would would drill the footings, tune/tamp the bottoms as you normally would, pour a footing as thick as the diameter of your hole. Attach a post stand off to the bottom of your post, and bury and tamp with the flat head of a digging bar little by little using modified base (used for paver base) this is the best comprimise between locking it in real tight while maintaing drainage as well

IRC Section 319, and sec 407 reference wood post conditions neither mention soil qualifications just that it need be pressure treated and on the ends exposed to the ground. Its all about shifting soil---if you have shifting ,sandy soil in Neveda you may need a wide footing than somewhere else.

Re: What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

Ever seen Aluma posts? They are drilled into the ground up to 9 feet, have an auger bit at the end, the post is wrapped in a nylon plastic sleeve and is cut at the correct hight at ground level. It has a aluminum base plate pre-drilled for posts and is adjustable by use of a threaded rod system. Ive built decks off 2 story condo's with them and seen entire caps built on them. Sweet system, I have a guy come in with his machine, and he sets them to my layout, costs me $140 per post and he guarantee's them for 5 years not to move. If they did move, all you do is adjust them up or down with a wrench, takes minuates. No more back breaking work, smarter not harder!!

Re: What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

Tom, they are a franchise out of canada I believe. The guy that does it here in maine own's the the franchise for Maine and I believe N.H. and Mass. He sold off some of his areas here in Maine a couple years ago, I should have bought it up, he is making a killing setting posts. The machine is compact, about the size of a lawn tractor and has a small boom that powers the auger. He sells you the machine and supplies posts that come from canada. I will give him a call and see if he knows of anyone in your area that does it. What State and County? I have never seen a website for it!!

It's actually called Techno Post, and they are out of Onterio Canada.
They sell franchises, if you dont have it in your area, it would be a great business to get into. The guy that has Maine is making a killin!!

Re: What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

that is an interesting product to say the least, looks good in theory, but how do you ensure they go in plumb, and I can see the smallest rock stopping it dead in its tracks, how long have you been using this system, have you experienced any problems with it??? interesting

Re: What Is Code For Filling In Post Holes

Bonesaw, Ive used it on several projects, believe me it's sweet. The machine can wiggle it past rocks pretty well, it takes a pretty good one to stop it. If you hit a big one, you move over and reset. I post to a support beam that spans the structure, so I can set over if need be. As for plumb, the machine puts it in as the tender plumbs the rod with a level, aint been a problem from what ive seen. There are 3 size rods for different load bearings, so you can adapt to your needs. They also have flat brackets to lag straight up or u shaped brackets to through bolt or lag into the beam or posts, what ever you want to go to.
