Re: What Is?

Cedar good!

Toss the boards with a lot of white in it off to the side. Shouldn't be too many if you have a good supplier. I just went through about 140 Red Cedar boards and had about 3 that were to white to use.

The white in the Cedar will break down the quickest.

"B" grade Redwood isn't that much more if you're looking for something a little different. Fewer and smaller knots as well.

Pony up for it 747, you got the dough.

I just restained my 5 year old Ipe deck. I used a spray on deck cleaner, then a brigtener then recoated with Penofin, it looks 95% brand new again, which says a lot since we are in UV central!

Re: What Is?

Cedar is ok for elevated decks, on low to ground decks I've seen it rot out in 8 years. Ipe is well worth the cost difference. Another good choice for decking is garapa, it's another brazilian hardwood, but at the cost of cedar.

Re: What Is?

There is a lumber yard in my sisters town which is about 15 minutes from me that specializes in cedar. Aparently according to there website they work with cabots so you can get it shipped out stained and ready to go. I don't understand there decking page. Can one of you guys take a look at this link http://www.edmundallen.com/Decking.asp and tell me what is the best to go with in the cedar they offer. I didn't know that lumber yard was big time like that.

You do know that cedar is about the softest wood besides balsa right? Even the squirrels will leave marks on the stuff.

New concrete patio it is. I'm being as serious as a heart attack. No maintance just rince off every once in a while. I'm not talking stamped concrete or anything like that. Just a regular concrete poor. Build a small step from patio door to get on it.

Re: What Is?

Put some nice slate or blue stone over the slab and you'll have a nice patio.

Re: What Is?

I currently have a concrete patio. But it is original to the house. ITs one thick piece of concrete. Must be around 14 inches thick. It has a crack in the middle. So i'm just going to hire a guy with a jackhammer on back of his tractor to get rid of it. That cant be more then 500 dollars. Then hire concrete guy to poor new slab i'm thinking 20x20 and i'm good to go. Then just build a step under the patio door i can do that. Grab 3 risers (2step) some pt screw those riser into sill under the patio door. Then cut some pt and screw into risers. I don't think it will be that much for 20x20 concrete poor unless concrete has went up. I'm thinking maybe 2,000 to the concrete guy i decide to hire. But i could be way off on that number.

It would cost me $500 just to dispose
of the old patio, let alone tear it out.
I'll bet it's more up there.
For a 4" slab the concrete alone would
be @ $700-$800 down here.
No fill, no labor, no prep.
Maybe just let all those numbers
drift on out of your head til you
talk to some area contractors.

Re: What Is?

You are gonna' drill and place some rebar hooks to the house to anchor the patio, right? If not, it's liable to 'drift' (move away from the house) over time.

Yeah, not just the tear out numbers are off so is 2k for 400 sq. ft. of concrete patio.

Re: What Is?

I got 3 bids today highest was 3750. Thats the guy I'm going with. That includes removing old patio and pouring new 20x20. Current patio is 20x18. You guys were rite i was off on the numbers but i'm happy with 3750. I went ahead and wrote him a check for the full amount and said get cooking. I"m know what you guys are thinking. You should have only gave him 50 percent down. I would have but i won't be around to give him the remaining 50 percent. I don't want him to wait for his money. Also he has a excellent reputation. Actually he did a new sidewalk for one of my neighbors and some landscaping early this summer.
