Web Site Thing
I need to find someone else to host my site. These guys> www.visionwebservices.com are up for renewal right now I get 20-40 spam hits a day. I have called them ten gazxillon times with no help at all.
So who do you Folks use?? and do you have the same spam problem?? Side Note>>> on my third job in many months we are unloding tools/material thru the soggie grass to the backyard, sometime inbetween my truck got robbed total loss around $700 in tools in not more than 5 min no one of course saw anything far as the neighobors go .Then we got rained out and had to repack everything that is what was left. <<< Ya know I hate those theives so much I cant hate them anymore. Remembering in the Milatary, bootcamp we were on record fire with pop up targets using the m 14 over White Sands way. It was a joke on the Bus back to camp" Man there is no point knocking those things down they just keep poping back up!!!!" If I had those MF in my site with a street sweeper 12 g I woudent fire there is just no point. John Mon |

Re: Web Site Thing
My guy is good at it, don't know if he will take you or if he can. Shoot me a PM and I will fill you in.
Don't look for my web site, it is not up yet because I'm still playing with it. my problem, not the guy who got me started.

Re: Web Site Thing
Go Daddy works fine for me - my Public emails addresses get spammed alot ---their are a few coding tricks you can use to help minimize that but my spam filters catch the bulk of them so I haven't bothered trying them

Re: Web Site Thing
I've used 1and1.com for a few years now, and had no problems with spam. Cheap hosting, easy interface. That's about it.

Re: Web Site Thing
1and1 is great if you're on a good server.
Sucks if you're on a bad on, and it's fried. Also, good luck getting service from them. If I remember correctly, I was at 95% one year instead of 99.9 up... I lost web service for 1 of my biggest weekends of advertising.... No real apology, no refund... Don't go too cheap! ~Matt |

Re: Web Site Thing
Not sure what you mean spam hits? Far as hosting goes I've been using godaddy for the last few months, no problems so far. Before that my old webguy did everything for me, design, maintenance, SEO & hosting.
You might want to pm Greg D, he does web design & probably can lead you down the right path. |

Re: Web Site Thing
The spamers are going for my contact area its completley unprotected. I keep calling the vision guys trying to get a sign in thing ya know with the distorted numbers and letters. The last time they even took my call they said I am one of thousands of sites and the one that complains the most gets set up with the sign in deal. ghessssssssssss. The renewal yearley cost is $600 due the end of this month so I have to do something pretty quick. J.

Re: Web Site Thing
Typically, spam is not a function of your website hosting company. It's almost part of life anymore. Most people use their hosting company as an e-mail host too. But you can change your e-mail host to virtually anyone without changing the hosting the website. What you need is an e-mail host that can filter your e-mails for spam (without filtering the important real e-mails). We recently changed our e-mail host to Google apps. It's free and uses the gmail spam filtering. They are really good at this and you can add custom filters for junk mail that you can't get rid of. I don't have enough posts to list a link so just google "google apps". It's fairly easy to setup as long as you have all your information and passwords.
I don't know what you have been $600 for but you are getting ripped off. Godaddy is cheap and fairly reliable. It's not 100%, but good enough for a low volume deck builder site. (versus an ecommerce or national news site). You should be paying less than $10 a month. If you need help feel free to PM me, I can either help or walk you through it. Or I can refer you to a decent web guy. |

Re: Web Site Thing
It looks like I can't pm you yet either Bud. Anyway I need all the help I can get If you would try geting in contact with me.
So Guys am I paying too much?? 10$ a month sounds good to me. I use that site like a nail gun I dont really know that much about it. My old host got out of the site business I actually found that Vision place off an add on this site. Maintenance is suposed to be part of the deal and they will place new pictures/change wording things like that but I am thinking godaddy will do the same?? I use my internet provider Cox Cable for E-mail and really I get like 3 spams every couple of months they let thru its the contact area on my site that is weak on that. J. |

Re: Web Site Thing
John - bummer about your tools - that blows.
On the website stuff, it sounds to me like you might be blending two different topics together: hosting, and web design. Hosting is purely opening up ("serving") those pages when someone types in deckmastersllc.com. That is cheap. The other is editing what it says on the pages, and making the pictures look pretty. That can get expensive. For buying both in a package maybe $600 isn't too bad, but I think you can do better especially since your site design is fairly basic right now. I would definitely go with what Greg Di recommends but one service I've used is Google Sites - very basic, but it both hosts and allows you to edit for just $10/year. By the way that wavy text is called a 'CAPTCHA'. Even with that you're going to get all kinds of spam off your site. I think you might want to change the way your form is and put your phone number and maybe not even use a form. You might get more good with the bad that way. |

Re: Web Site Thing
Thanks Marty.
I am now understanding the works of a web site the most important thing the Domain I must have signed over to Vision so they own the damm thing. If they dont let it go in a peacefull nature I have to start all over again including Deckmastersllc.com Suckie darn and PooPoo. That means a lot far as coverage not to mention changing all the cards, contract forms, irs, Fu (blep blep)ingggg everything. GoDaddy is a good deal $150 three years with me doing all the changes/pictures verbage things like that and most likely $600 a year is the going rate if they do all that. I am sure I can learn for that kind of $ and really I dont plan to make a lot of changes during this bad money time thing going on. So the John Mon has made a big mistake not reading the fine print...mabey..all depends on Vision infosoft corp leting me get back my own WebSite and the name and all the rest. I am a pretty good Woodworker, and I key in a nice contract, and I know how to make the Wallet happy but I defentley droped the ball on this one. J. |
