Re: Wd 40 On Ipe
The main ingredient in WD40 is
*"Solvent Naphtha Petroleum Medium Aliphatic" (60%) then *Petroleum based oil, as a Paraffinic distillate, heavy, solvent-dewaxed 15-20% *Corrosion Inhibitor 1-10% ( some speculate it's fish oil) *Wetting agent 1-10% *Fragrance 0-1% *Carbon Dioxide 2-3% There is actually no silicone in WD-40 The Carbon Dioxide is used to surpress combustion. One big draw back to using WD40, is the amount of dust that will build up on the deck and it does not wash off easily. I would also worry about the long term effect the NPMA would have on the wood, it may not allow a proper sealer to penetrate correctly. Try wood conditioner like Penatrol first, then put a coat of Pennifin on the deck, The key to pennifin is to build up a protective layer over time. Apply 2nd coat at 6 months, then yearly for the next couple of years, after that you could 2-3 years between coats. When I used the Penatrol I would get atleast 2 years between coats ( after the first, 6-month, & 12 month coats) Penatrol is a penetrating agent that has the abilitiy to carry other ingredients with it into the host product ( wood) |

Re: Wd 40 On Ipe
Not that I, in any way, agree with the OP, but where are we deriving our info concerning the ingredients of WD 40?
Graphite? Silicone? Just a Serious Question.

Re: Wd 40 On Ipe
Interesting......
Until a few years ago, it NEVER said "Lubricant" on the can. After all.....It is a "Water Displacer", attempt #40. That is NOT patented in order to "Protect" the recipe!! My main use is for tool protection and for "Dressing" Metal Surfaces as one would use Sheila-Shine. http://www.sheilashineinc.com/ NEVER use WD to lubricate a lock. Works great for picking a lock, but over a short time, evaporation leads to caking of debris in the lock which leads to inevitable failure of said device!

Re: Wd 40 On IpeGreat stuffs for fixing that which has been exposed. Makes for a GREAT "Lock Cleaner", but NEVER use it for lubricating purposes. It emulsifies the gunk in the lock, shifts it around, then evaporates and "clogs" the pin-ways/shafts. In the long run it will do more harm than good to a lock, but it is the ONLY thing I use when picking, freeing or servicing a lock. Graphite powder is what is for conditioning a non-warded mechanical locking device. WD also has fantastic capillary-action properties. It LOVES to "travel"! This is ALWAYS in my kit! ![]() https://www.partsquik.com/prod/images/WD-40PEN.jpg
