Wd 40 On Ipe

I was told by a painter friend that they use wd 40 in Ipe, is there a down side to doing this?

Just plain wd 40 as a finish instead of a wood oil, it looks great but I was wondering if it could negative affects on the Ipe later on.

WD-40 contains graphite.
It has no UV protection.
There are dozens of good products
for wood protection.
WD-40 isn't one of them.

It also contains silicone. This will prevent you from putting down a normal finish in the future. You do not want to do this.

what was the "upside" your painter friend told you that would benefit your ipe by applying WD 40?

The painter has used it on Ipe in the past, and has held up for about a year. The upside was that it is easy to apply, just spray and wipe about once a year. The wood that I saw looked great, but like I say I was wondering about long term affects on wood. Has anyone actually heard or have seen this done?

I bet the painter didn't use it on his own $20,000 Ipe deck, did he?

I'll never understand people not using the right products to do their intended job.

It would be like a surgeon using an X-acto knife instead of a scalpel.

I saw a knee replacement done on discovery channel with what appeared to be a cordless makita 7.2. Those fixtures screw in just like handrail brackets. It may have been a Fein that they shaped the bones with though, I'm serious.

UV protection is the thing most all outdoor finish containes micro metal particles the sun hits these and reflects its called sun scatering, same thing with sun block.

WD used as an outdoor finish is a really bad idea. J.

Oh, never mind, he doesn't - jacklegs who use snipe lips and possum hides, piss in their paint etc... don't warranty anything anyways.

The only guys who subscribe to wives tales back country stuff like this are guys who are looking for short-cuts.

You said it yourself he does it because it's easy and cheap, not because it's harder to apply and costs 3 times more but the results are better.

Most painters don't know squat about deck staining. Proof is one telling you to use WD40 on the best decking in the world.

WD-40 is good for fixing sqeaks....says so on the can.

Thanks all good replies, but no one has actually answered my question, has anyone out there ever tried it on Ipe. The problem in Hawaii is that no matter what finish you put on Ipe it has to be redone about once a year. I am not looking for a cheap easy fix, just a better end result. I know it sounds crazy but I would like to know if it could work. There has to be someone out there who has tried it, but because of some of the comments I have seen, may be afraid to admit it

Why dont you just get a small piece and slather it up with some WD, put it out side and see what it looks like for your self.

Good lord, it seriously sounds like the craziest thing I have heard in a while.

You're serious, aren't you?
It would never ever occur to me to use WD-40 as a wood finish. I keep a can in my tool box, and I've used it liberally on my car and on rusty metal screws and such, but I would never use it on wood. ESPECIALLY IPE.

I have used Pennafin, Cabot, and a couple of other things that are oil based and made speciffically for outdoor use, but for chri--oops---, gosh sakes, this stuff was never intended as a paint, a stain, or a preservative finish.

And no need to get huffy with us. We are all just incredulous that a painter could give you such silly advice.
