Vinyl Fencing As Railing

Anyone have a vinyl fence that they would recommend for a deck railing?

http://www.usavinyl.com/solprivtonan.html

This is what I was looking at, but wasn't sure if it would be rugged enough. If anyone has used it, would I be able to fill the upper and bottom with 2x material to add to the stiffness? I would drop to a 6' span, but already have posts in for 8' sections......she changed her mind and went from railing to fence. Can and will change them if the railing isn't stiff enough.

I do not know about that one. The bottom rail in that fence already has an aluminum c channel that is somewhat sturdy. You would have to fill the top with a 2x possibly ripped down. My concern would be the tongue and groove pickets. A decent kick and those things are flying out. I would be worried about people leaning against them and falling through.

Try something like this with 3 rails, aluminum inserts in each one.

why not use a rail designed and tested to be used for that purpose....someone falls who is responsible...it's all about liability.Common sense and style choices never win in court.

Don't allow her minor savings to become your major liability.

Thanks Curapa...thats what I was looking for was rather it would be rugged enough....Know of anyplace I can get something in the style that I had posted....or can the 7' be cut down and a privacy lattice mounted on top? SHe really liked the style with the lattice and is a fairly short woman.

Thanks Tom, It's never been about saving her money....been paying her bill real regular and never squealed once. One of the few customers that asks if I need more money It's going on the end of a 1,500 sq ft deck.

Call USAvinyl, most vinyl fence companies can mix components pretty easy. You may have to order blank posts and cut out the holes yourself or have to fill the top rail with a 2x if they provide you with the lattice top rails. You definately need three rails with inserts and the thicker .065 pickets would be best.

I would ask for a mix of the Augusta and Ashton.

I would also suggest inserting a wood post inside of the PVC posts. Those things will move a bit when pushed on without reinforcements.

If you do use vinyl fencing remember to notch the rails to keep them from sliding out of the posts. USAvinyl sells notchers that work great.

Let me know what they say

Called and still waiting on a quote..Guy on the other ends said that he could cutom make anything I wanted..so I told him...he does some quick math (I guess) and says "sir, that would be cost prohibitive" I says, how about you let me make that decision.

We'll see, I'll drop the price here when I get it.

Wow their quick!! Price for an 8' section - $290, Not bad and I can live with that, connectors and post sleeves also not bad...Freight was $180 Will talk it over with her, but think I will be looking at pulling my middle post, replacing the 16' piece of correct deck and going to smaller sections. She is going to end up spending the money one way or the other, just a matter of rather they get it or I do.

Curapa, since you steered me back to them I'll go out on a limb and say you like thier products?

Yes, they do have great products. Their standard pickets and posts are thicker than most in the same price range, they have a great turn around time and they even send you digital pics or your order before it leaves.

I have recently switched to a local company because they offered me a competitive product with better prices and a quicker lead time, but USAvinyl is first class in its own respects.

Thats funny I was actually looking at one of these. Went back to the certainteed site as the rest of therailing on the deck is the panorama.

The railing itself is pretty nice, but could be a touch more rugged. They almost need a steel rail in them. I hind sight being 20/20 I would have went on 6' centers on the whole deck

For future projects there is a new site called BuyDirectVinylFence.com, they are a vinyl fencing manufacturer and just opened up a store online. I buy alot of fencing from them including porch railing.
