I prefer not to work with it either, but still have to sometimes, I pay between $1.95-2.05. He does'nt have as many choices as you or I do, distribution is tough up there, there is'nt 100 different product lines available just short of the Artic Circle.

No... you do have a choice. I turn down projects that insist on using crap material. Sometimes people "have a contact" and can "get it for an amazing price". I tell them that I wont install a product that is junk.

Trex today is a different company & product than Trex of 3 years ago...

Re: Trex Lineal Foot Price?

I used it on one deck, the last trex deck I'll do. I've seen & heard of too many problems to ever use it again. I can easily lead folks away from trex towards some other decking that I feel comfortable using.

I know of one hardwood decking yard here that has some units that they will just about give away as all they do is collect dust cause no one will buy it when they see all the hardwood choices.

Have you ever worked in Anchorage AK. Things are different, freight is a huge part. I have worked several projects in the area and getting materials is a bi*ch. You dont just run from one supplier to the next until your satisfied, unless you buy by the container ship it up yourself and force sale it to your clients, see how that works out for ya.

A place near me bought truckloads of factory seconds... They're down to .85/lf.

Must be some good stuff

I dont force my customers to use my preferred products... I educate consumers about their deck project and the options available to them. When they realize that I spend more time researching and testing products in 1 month than most contractors do in a year they trust my advice.

I would love to live in Alaska and I would quickly get the suppliers to realize the need to supply a better product instead of blindly following reps yammering. Or just supplying the biggest names simply because they are the biggest names.

You must of done the factory tour. The newer stuff is not bad at all. Beats the old product by a landslide. I was really impressed after visiting the plant.

Re: Trex Lineal Foot Price?

$2.05 a lineal is about what I expected. Trex has an excellent reputation up here in Anchorage. It handles our unique weather very well. I have been installing Trex since it first came out. I have used several other composites that were pure crap. Starboard, Weathersbest, Amerideck, I can't think of the others. Timbertech is just now available up here. I haven't had a chance to try it. I will give it a shot. I hadn't even heard of Ipe until I started surfing this forum. I am going to see if its here and see about getting it up here if it is not.

Ding Ding!

That and several long talks with my rep.

They've improved the process, which is turning out a higher-quality and better consistency product.

Also, they've made several adjustments with the management. Not only do the guys now in charge "get it" but they're willing to "take it" as well. Instead of just insisting that they are the best for everyone every time, and getting offended if told otherwise... they're willing to listen and learn.

They're working hard with the Artisan railing system. Got lots of adjustability, a good "feel" and a price point that is just slightly north of RDI's Endurance- that's a heck of a deal!

They've got more work to do, but they're headed in the right direction.

There. That's my thoughts on Trex. You're cutting your customer short by not at least showing it alongside a few other options (which will vary depending on your location). It's not always the best option, but it's usually worth considering.

HTH,
~Matt

Greg, the trex line sucks, EXCEPT for the Escapes, we use that quite a bit, just as good if not better than Azek Procell.

Only bummer is the lack of HFS and matching fascia...
Cost is a concern as well. Adjust those 3 areas, and it'd be an incrediable product!
