Trex Gate??

I am bidding on a job that will involve replaceing decking with trex and doing trex traditional railing and the client wants a gate about 36-40" wide. Anyone ever make one outta trex materials, or do they come madeup up already?

You make one up to match the railing. I use Easy Gate brackets, I find them to work best on Trex or other heavy gate material and it takes about 15 minutes to make a gate .

Good luck

Re: Trex Gate??

Hello, I am a representative of Trex. This can be done but there is a great potential for the gate to sag due to the weight of the Trex. One thing we recommend using is fence gate hardware in that it is made to hold heavier material than that of standard gate hardware. Another recommendation is to install a wheel on the bottom of the gate to allow for added support. The problem with this is that the wheel could leave a mark on the deck over time. The only other possible solution would be to build the gate out of both pressure treated framing and the Trex balusters and top rail. The pressure treated would have to be painted but it would help prevent sagging.

I was going to suggest building a Hybrid of Trex with the main structure being ACQ, GMOD

I would rather use glued up pasta than trex.

Re: Trex Gate??

I was going to say you could use a quality product and not have issues at all and you could add a wheel and it would not mark up a quality material... (in other words trex sucks)

Re: Trex Gate??

I've built one out of trex before with no problems.

I built a mitered flat 2"x4" frame, screwed the ballusters to it, them capped it with a trex 2"x4" to match the rail. I just used regular gate hinges and latch. To keep it from sagging I just used one of those anti sag adjustable rods, I cant remember the real name of them. I think a wheel on the bottom sounds a little goofy lol.

Re: Trex Gate??

I have built many gates from Trex. The anti -sag kit is #1, along with making some sort of support to hold the weight of the gate when closed or open. Even just an eye hook that takes a little uplift to latch will do wonders for the longevity. Normal hinges work fine and it looks better than a lot of bracketry,

Everytime I go back because the **** is delaminating, the gates have held up suprisingly well.

Re: Trex Gate??

Thanks guys,
The wheel does sound hokey to me.
And Trex would'nt be my first choice either but, it's not my deck.
Anyway, they apparently had no idea how much the project would cost, so they need to save more...

Re: Trex Gate??

There is a placce in Utah that makes trex gates for fences, they can probably give you some numbers on a railing gate.

Re: Trex Gate??

Use Tt radiance rail and have Tt build it for you. Spend all that money on deck material and put up a pressure treated railing? I feel like slamming my head into a wall. I can't imagine how cheap that would look.

Hey, check out Trex's fencing website, TrexFencing.com. They talk all about gates on there. If you call them up they might even be able to send some install instructions if they're not on the site.

I do recommend using some stronger hardware, we install a lot of Trex Fencing and designed some special hardware that fits well.
