Time Saver For Post Holes

Anybody used this new gadget yet, Oz-Post (www.oz-post.com)? Looks like it will save a lot of time digging holes, pouring conrete, etc. I'm all for working smarter and not harder.

Might be okay for temporary posts but not for permanent, won't meet code or load requirments.

Andy, you need to get rid of the "(" and the ")?" in your link, it doesn't work. The correct line is http://www.oz-post.com

The best use for the Oz-Post is for anchoring "For Sale" realtor signs that are not there that long, do not have to be straight and can be removed easily.

They have been around for a while, but have really no gotten anwhere in real construction like fences. - No good for a deck.

Looks like it is designed for sign posts etc. Not to replace a deck support. Maybe a temporary fence.

Replace?

They think it's the end-all-be-all for decks:

I don't think so

Notice how they don't come out and say (with any certainty) that the decks in those pictures are supported with their product. What the reader ASSUMES is none of their doing and they certainly can't be held responsible for it.

It shouldn't take a whole lot of intelligence to figure out that using something that is driven into the ground vertically to carry a vertical load is a bad idea.

I've never used them, so I don't know, but they may be strong laterally, which would make them useful for sign posts and possibly fences, particularly in temporary applications.

Not quite the response I was expecting. I haven't used this oz post myself, but I was thinking there would be a little more enthusiasm from the group. No digging post holes, no augers, no cement, and from I have read it says it meets all building code requirements (along with the usual fine print bs from the lawyers). Looks pretty impressive if you watch the videos on the website.

Andy,

From an Engineering standpoint, It can not work. Pouring Cement into a hole is not that simple. We are creating a Footing 42" below ground(or what ever your areas frost line is) that will be capable of carrying the load above it. The bottom of that hole needs to be level and solid. No Loose Dirt. In many areas that are now requiring a larger foot at the bottom as well.

Hammering a post into the ground that is spear shaped will not be capable of supporting a load. You can hammer a flat bottom post into the ground until refusal at a certian pre determined PSI which is calculated based on soil testing, but this is far more costly and requires heavy equipment.

So we are NOT against this for installing a sign or a temporary fence, but to support a permanent structure of any type...YES this product would be a No No regardless of how they want to spin it.

Re: Time Saver For Post Holes

I think it looks like a great idea!

But then again, most things that look too good to be true are.

Looks to be about as stable as making a cross of 6' 2x4s nailed to the bottom of your post sitting on the ground.

Now maybe if we installed a big spring to fight against wind knockover...

Re: Time Saver For Post Holes

If you comb over thier website it provides all the test data you would need concerning resistance to wind and the strenght of the in ground post. For a typical post application the oz post has tested to be just as strong as a concrete setting, ans has tested out to 120 mph wind resistance (at which point the wood post breaks). My point of veiw is hey, if this meets code (which they say it does) than great, I just saved myself a day on the job. If not, I dont use it and no skin off my back. Wish we could find someone out there who has actually used this.
