Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
I installed a Timbertech deck for a customer and it's not even been two weeks the deck has stains from the rain ...it doesn't even look new anymore, and from the reputation of the company I am surprised that this is happening! ...any suggestions/solutions?

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
I have installed TT decking and never had a problem with stains. It might just be a film or residue on the material. Maybe you can just rinse it off with some water and a hard brush.

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
I tried brushing it off after I installed it, because it had a few stains back then as well and it didn't work too well. I went back today for something else and I saw many new stains; the costumer wasn't too happy either, especially since i recommended TT. It might just be collected dirt from the lumberyard or something idk

Try using one of the deck cleaners... Olympic or something along those lines...use it as a marketing piece with the homeowners.
If you still have problems, clean it well & stain it. (You can always call TT if you think it's defective). ~Matt |

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
I have used a pressure washer on the lowest setting with great results. The TT does seem to have a film on it from manufacturing and with just rain it will spot. I pressure wash all decks before leaving. No problems yet. And don't worry about the pressure washer causing damage it took about a minute of the highest setting in one spot to make a mark on a sample piece.

TT or any composite that has ben sitting in the sun is easily damaged by a pressure washer. Bleach also fades them out but is the only thing that will remove mold spots.
Alvi, what do the spots look like? |

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
Which grade of T'Tech is it? Some of them, I think primarily TwinFinish, can get tannin bleed when new. It is no big deal, I think they recommend an oxalic acid type cleaner (e.g. DAP Wood Bleach) for this. You'll get tannin bleed around where there is condensation on a deck, like where someone sets a beer bottle or a cooler. It's a reaction between the sun, water, and the tannic acid in the wood, and it creates a strongly colored chemical species. It will stop happening after 10-12 weeks once it all bleeds out. Marty

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
Most likely it is tannin stains coming thru and will go away after awhile. The best fix is some of the products listed in Timbertech's installtion instructions. I have used Jomax and the product works great. Jomax is made by zinser a top of the line product. I works great for mold and mildew and dirt. There are decks cleaners that work great for tannin stains as well.

Iv'e seen dog drool leave terrible stains on TT and Trex. The deckwash from Home depot worked pretty good.

We are having the same issue. Spots came after first rain. What solution did you find?

A little bit of deck cleaner and a pressure washing (on low setting or with a wide tip) will take the tannin blead out.

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
I also am intersted in the kind of TT used.
In any case do not use a power washer on Any man made decking. Reread. Again. Two weeks is way to soon to deal with any water marks. Leave the thing alone. I have found in my area rain can contain many things depending on the weather before the rain came. It's possible some contaminate in the air came to rest on that deck I have had this happen more than one time. Now that I think about it there are no tannin stains coming up from TT decking it's not possible. Tannin stains can form on top of it but nothing like that is coming from inside it. Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
Every composite deck I have done has always looked like crap after a few weeks. Every single one has had a issue with mold. The funny thing is the first 2 boards laid from the house are always fine on each of them. Must be something about the heat from the brick and siding drying out the first few boards before mold starts to form. I now steer clear of the stuff. would love to know why the boards close to the house don't mold up though.

Thanks. We have already scrubbed it with the recommended cleaner and then pressure washed it. Spots are still there....any other ideas?

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
This thread is from 2007... without knowing what product line from tt is being used we cannot recommend something. It drives me bonkers when someone fails to give enough info to make an informed recommendation. If i went to a car forum and asked " how do I fix my car?" Do you think i would get any good advice? Do you think they might recommend that i inform them of the manufacturer and model might help a little? How about the year? Provide ALL the information so we can recommend something. Help us help you.

Re: Timbertech Decking Is Getting Stain Spots From Water
We are having an apparent water spotting issue with XLM, walnut and harvest bronze. White spots, everywhere. Do not come off with cleaner or power washing. Has anyone else had this problem?
