Thoughts On Cumaru?

I've only used Ipe when hardwood is called for. But the price is getting little steep. I was thinking about trying some Cumaru. Any thoughts on it? From an appearance standpoint, how does it compare to Ipe?

Re: Thoughts On Cumaru?

Cumaru is less stable than ipe not only on install but down the road it will surface check to a much larger degree. Its major use is Com jobs but I have seen latley its geting back into Res ,the look is almost the same but Cumaru has little silver specks in the grain they take finish the same. Equal long life.

Ipe is geting a little high for a lot of reasons but mainley because of its track record, its a sure thing, you might check into Garapa it has a golden color that shortley turns golden brown in the sun also some very cool grain patterns and rays in a few boards that I lay up in the shop for benches/tables. Same long life, easy to work with, takes finish well, the dust is major freindley compaired to ipe. Good place to get the S American lumber> EastTeak < J.

Re: Thoughts On Cumaru?

Cumaru looks similar to ipe, but not nearly as stable. I have seen 1x6 cumaru deck boards go bad after installation, major twisting, cupping, & wavey. If you are looking for a less expensive option than ipe for your potential hardwood deck customers I would suggest garapa that John mentioned or tigerwood and or angelim.
