Surface Mounted Posts

Anyone have any experience or knowledge with these surface mounted railing posts for decks? They use 2 mounting plates to sandwich the decking material in order to fasten the railing post to the decking material. I'm concerned with how sturdy can this be. How much lateral "strength" does this design have?

I saw the style Cheapo carries called Yardsmart or www.usfenceonline.com

Does the harsware stand up to the treated lumber?

Does it have any code approvals?

- The site is very vague.

Re: Surface Mounted Posts

yardsmart is lowes crap, anyway nothing wrong with flange mounted posts, however I would ditch the sandwhich concept and do 6x6 blocking between bays where needed and use ledgerlocks. I have done this many times and is my perfered method for installing a "kit" rail post, easy to maintain continuity in offset around miters and corners. Only drawback I would have to say is it takes quite a bit of finness to get everyting plumb yet fastened down tight.

Bone Saw,

What are ledger locks? Not familiar with that terminology. Also, with the kits you have installed, you haven't had any lateral movement (or cheap feeling) when leaning on the railing?

Thanks in advance

no, for a flange mount to work it must be fastened down TIGHT and that is the reason I use the ledgerlocks they have a much more aggressive thread/shank diameter ratio that anything out there, I just use em for everything,

They are aces for LVL's too!
"Spax" has something like, in a wider variety we use a lot. Rated for PT, and go right into concrete, like tapcons.

Re: Surface Mounted Posts

For longevity surface mounting any type of post i would not recomend. The best way to install pvc railings in decks is to box in some cca post and sleeve the pvc post over them.Same with a trex style railing. The only other post support method i would use would be bufftecks post supports.
