Re: Stairway To Heaven

That could be a lot of fun to move Coming along very nicely, that is going to be one sweet staircase. I think it will almost be cooler since its made out of wood. Anyone can build a stuff like that out of metal. It takes skill to make it out of wood.

Right on, man! When alls said and done, you ought to pony up the dough to get some aerial shots (or quasi-aerial) of that project. That's a brochure pic waiting to be discovered. Call your TREX rep, see if they're interested -

I like the straps for the rail posts... I do the exact same thing. Best way to keep them tight.

Re: Stairway To Heaven

It is very, very nice work! I only have one question, of which I'm sure you have the answer to. Doesn't the tread span, outside stringer to outside stringer require stringers to hold the tread up between them? I may have missed something in the pics, if I did forgive me. I am not cutting your work, I think it is top knotch! Just wondering.

I hear what you're saying and I pondered it myself when designing, Hopefully I can explain. when laying out a stringer on a 2x12 (as it pertains to decking) you end up with about 5" +/- of meat left in the stringers chord, whereas In my case there is the full 7-1/4" and 9-1/4" of the stringers chord.
So lets say you have a set of stairs 4' wide;
cut stringers: (4)stringers @ 5"+/- = 20"+/- of structural chordage

end stringers: (2) stringers @ 7-1/4" and 9-1/4" = 16-1/2" of structural chordage

the 3-1/2" difference is of minimal signifigance, ultimately any deflection along the stairs run can be eliminated with intermediate support.

far as deflection in the treads, depends on what you use for treads and their span, for greater widths aluminum with a channel bend front and back would probably offer the best strength/weight ratio. In my case I cut em out of select 2x12 there is no deflection when I step on them, if the stairs were say 5 or 6' wide I prolly would have used PTLVL for the treads. I hope this helps, and I hope the pix help someone doing similar work

Re: Stairway To Heaven

hopefully marty will chime in, I wish we had some other decking reps in here too. since completing this project a little over 2 years ago, customer has done some amazing things to the back yard. aside from the already beautiful home and serene landscape and setting, he has an amazing paver patio and stunning pool which along with my deck, really make this home a showpiece.

now to my question,

if given the opportunity to tear off the decking and railing and redo, could there be interest (marketing or otherwise) among manufacturers to have their product on this deck???

lets hear some product and color scheme scenarios.

will wait for feedback before continuing. tia

Re: Stairway To Heaven

Bone, sometimes we have done photo discounts, something like that - a promotional discount for a deck that we can use in a photo shoot, usually direct to the homeowner.
