SS Ledger Brackets, Real Or Fantasy?

I seem to remember seeing a product that you fasten to the wall of a house and then fasten the ledger board to these marine grade stainless steel brackets.

Is this another one of my delusions or do these exist?

Re: SS Ledger Brackets, Real Or Fantasy?

Yes, they exist. I saw them last weekend at a lumberyard. I'm sorry but the name escapes me.

They were shaped like a hook, one bolt or lag into the wall and then one through the ledger. The ledger sits in the hook and is offset from the wall by a small amount.

They were quite costly and I was a little concerned about their stability.

The were also marketed as protection from intruders. A bracket each side of a door, with a 2x4 set in them.

Re: SS Ledger Brackets, Real Or Fantasy?

Thanks for the help guys.

The hangers are $23 a pop plus s&h on their website.

The application here is to mount the ledger to vertical t&g wood siding. My thought was to mount the hanger against the siding and use ledger locks to fasten the brackets into the rim joist of the house, fastening into the end of the existing floor joists as well.

The footprint of those brackets is a bit clunkier than what I was picturing in my head. It looks like they're running a bracket about every 4.5 to 5 feet in their example photos?

I like how they caulk around the bare unpainted wood with silicone, that'll look really nice painted...

I have no access to the framing inside to through-bolt anything.

After seeing those thick wall stand offs I'm thinking they may work better. Do you guys see an issue with using them with ledger locks instead of carriage bolts?

Yeah, I've seen them here in a few stores. Word of caution, they're alumiunum. The higher copper content in the new PT corrodes aluminum quickly. I would caution using these at all.

This is from their site:

Quote:
There has been concern about PT wood on the Maine Deck Bracket being made of aluminum. The problem is the copper content in the treating process and the reaction between dissimilar metals. It has been recommended by both the treating people we talked to and the aluminum manufactures is to simply staple felt paper, poly, or other material that would not allow direct contact with the wood, to the wood where the Bracket contact point would be before installing. This should eliminate any problems with he use of the Maine Deck Bracket and Treated lumber.

This is from their site:
At the risk of beating a dead horse,
look at the tags on your treated lumber.
While I don't think it applies to fir,
a very large percentage of
TYP is now micronized copper not
ACQ.
The chemicals are different, the rules are
different.
The new stuff is less corrosive, and is
approved for aluminum flashing.

Like the ACQ roll out, you have to look
for yourself to know which you're getting.
As of now I have to special order ACQ, other
than two yards who carry very few 2X's
in it and those are all 16' 2X6 at one, and
only 2X6 and 2X8 18' and over at the other.
I'm talking about all local lumber yards
not just the boxes.
Surely this isn't the only market
where this is happening.

YES, I said it has nothing to do
with FIR!
Apparently the process doesn't work for fir.

Re: SS Ledger Brackets, Real Or Fantasy?

Just for your info. The deck bracket that I saw was not the Maine deck bracket. This one was actually probably hot dipped galvanized. It was much smaller then the maine bracket and actually had a U shaped bracket, that the ledger sat in.
