Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
In my area, you must be clear of the leach field by 5'. To my knowledge, there is no restriction as to distance from the septic tank itself, other then it must remain accessable.

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
Accessible tom clean, but he said that the deck will be covering the tank by 2'. Is that even legal?

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
Just a minor correction in the necessary soil strength -
I assume it was meant by Deck King was to say 3300 psf and not 3300 psi. The 3300 psi (usually 3000 psi) would be the minimal strength of concrete. In most areas 2500 psf is adequate and most standard designs/code compliance standards are based on about 2500 psf.

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
Throw a glulam in and stain it....you can get something off the shelf in your local yard most likely...and then u can eliminate that middle post. Might need to up grade to 10" or 12" sonotubes tho.

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
Well....they do make pressure treated parallams now. Bet it's expensive as hell though.

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
not sure of your layout, but could you go with 4 posts and split over the problem area? not sure if you can fit it in the budget, or if it will work with where the tank is.

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
I know in my area (eastern PA), we cannot disturb the ground usually within 5' of the septic tank and leach field. Some places have even further distances. Building codes vary by state and locality, so call the local building department and see what they say, and also verify it with a local septic contractor. The biggest thing here, in my opinion, is that there is a limited shelf life on septic systems and not if it needs to be replaced but when...

Re: Sonar Tube Next To A Septic System
Typically a septic tank must be ten feet away from a dwelling with a basement or other excavation. Also typically piers are not addressed with any type of prescriptive method noted in the IRC. Most pier designs requiring an engineers stamp would need to be engineered by the one stamping it. They would probably not allow such installation if they have liability for it...I am just guessing but I've been around the block a few times. If it's a pier for a deck it wouldnt worry me that much because if it caused a problem it's fairly easy to modify. My question is why not modify it now and avoid any precieved problems.
