Shiny Ipe Floor

Just finished a porch with 1x4 T&G Ipe flooring. Gave it a coat of Penofin red label but as you know it doesn't give me a gloss look what is okay but not to the homeowner. I don't recommend putting on a polyurethane coating on it despite it is (indoors). Anybody has done this without problems?

If you have time and good weather twp 100 series will build coat to a simi gloss.

Those twp guys have been around the block with out door finish. The 1000 series was used on ipe manhole covers for one of those S Cal docks folks are driving on it and drifting on by on rollor blades.

There are a few little tricks to building coats with the 100 but I have done it,no lifting,no pealing and if it gets scrached just put on some more. The stuff works a lot like watco dainish oil. JonMon

On a slightly different topic, for an outside deck.

I can't seem to get the TWP 100 series in PA. Is the 500 series a good replacement?

Also, how are the TWP in preventing mildew?

Its on an outside deck with a northern exposure , which gets very little direct sunlight, and never seems to really dry out.

I've narrowed my options down to Messmers, Penafin, Cabot's Australian Oil or TWP (if I can get it)......yeah, I know, not much narrowing down so far.

I've read that Messmers is good, but it does not prevent mildew as well as others.

Also, I'm end up applying in cold/cooler weather. not sure if some are better than others at being applied in the cold (45-50 degrees daytime)

Is the concern about applying clear poly about the possibility of peeling or the slip and fall hazard, or something else?

I've seen folks at grit to the poly to make it safer.

If the porch is totaly enclosed, I would think that the ext. polyurathane (oil based) would be OK. I've used it on some outdoor furniture and it looks great, but I have to sand it down and do it again every year.

Yes it peels up. Probably because I have not sealed all 4 sides, and moisture gets under the finish.

The concern I have is like Mark said the peeling or cracks that will show up in the future. I have coated a lot of Ipe decks wit TWP 116 but it is harder and harder to get here on the coast. I started it when John recommended it years back and I do really like it.
This is still a snapshot. As I'm writing this the porch is completed and we have these screensystems in with these rectrectable acrylic windows.
I will make another shot later this week but I will probably have to come back when the landscaping looks a little better.
The top is done with DekStone (about 7000 lbs on top of the porch!)
In between I have the torchdown roof which I have done by a roofer.

Its a deal with the twp 100 series, same ol dammmm green mafia those guys are screwing up a lot of things now with the local pres its one open jug for the fag monkeys, anyway the 116 will build to a nice gloss finish if you can get it. No prob over here in cow town.

The 500 series took out the voc and added some oil sheeeeeola so it takes longer to set up. I have tested it as well as the water base twp but its too early for me to know how it works in the long run. .

whats wrong with saying ****??? would poo poo be better.

As some of you know a book has been published ( Deck Designs) by Steve Cory and I'm in there about 45 pages. You can buy it at the HD / Lowes or bookstores. Steve called me that he signed a contract with the publisher to write a book about porches. He is shopping around nationwide for builders that do porches and asking for some pictures. You may have a change to be in there with a porch project what will be numerous pages.
This will have to be a simple design porch but the book will be filled with all kinds of style porches.
I will be in there with a few other ones but he needs a few more.

If anyone is needing TWP, we will be shipping TWP nationally in a few weeks. There will be "some" restrictions regarding destination location. For instance, no TWP 100 to CA; only TWP 500. If you can't find any locally, let me know we can probably get some out earlier if needed.

I put spar eurathane on a big restaurant deck several years back. They wanted a gloss clear coat over a stained cedar deck with the grit added for traction. It looked nice while it lasted, but with thousands of feet walking on it everyday it wore off to fast to tell if the spar eurathane held up without peeling/cracking. I did thin it down with laquer thinner so it would absorb better.

I think with ipe the concern would be the stuff just laying too thick on top & not penetrating the wood.

The guys at Austin Wholesale built a sales counter with garapa & tigerwood that they put poly eurathane, it still looks good @ about 3-4 years old, not outside tho.
