Shadow Box Fencing

I have a small fence to build to hide some pool equipment , How far apart should the pickets be placed? I started with a 4 1/2" gap , but I am not liking that. any help would be appreciated.

Re: Shadow Box Fencing

a true shadow box you don't see thru because the boards alternate front to back on the rails. Is that what you are building?

Because of building codes and the 4" requirement, I always put all spacing at < 4". Even tho you can't put an object thru a shadow box, somehow a child could possibly get stuck.

That being said, if the boards are 3.5 then I would space 2.5 inches but that is my preference.

Re: Shadow Box Fencing

go to three or drive around and find an example that looks right to you and copy that.

I have a good customer that does their remodel design by "drive around designing". They bring back pictures and addresses of what they like and ask if it can be done to their exterior.

Yeah with 1x6 I think that would look odd. I would go with 1 1/2" gaps.
I don't do much fencing though.

I usually space 1X6 @ 3½-3¾".

Re: Shadow Box Fencing

I space mine 3 1/2" apart. I use a 2x4 as a spacer.

Same here. I cut out the center sides to hold as a handle.
