Shade Sails
Guys just google it up, I am thinking this can be a very cool hadrail detail.
Code Smode,,,, the potential is great!! think about it...all the color, braded steel cable, really strong fabric, could be in tandum with a top flaping in the wind. Might be a simi result of home grown/ BL lime but I think Im on to something!! Sailing ships have used canvis , from the hemp plant of course, for railing all along . I Tell You Mon This could work!! Re: Shade Sails
It'd make some nice roll down shadecloth on west facing covered patios & pergolas too. I recently built a pergola & put shadecloth above the 2x2's, the kind that blocks 90% of the uv rays. The shadecloth companies website said it could drop the temps as much as 20 degrees. I don't know about that, but I could sure tell the difference when I walked under it.

There is a house down the street from me that has a few of those, they do look pretty cool but whoever installed them there hung them on PT 4x4's that have warped inward towards the sails. I do like the idea though. |

Re: Shade Sails
Those things make a great looking shade cover I saw a few over a resturant in San Antonio and started googling around and found them. I am thinking use one over the top combined with fabric in the rail detail.
It would have to be the right sale and not look like a county fair.. I am drawing up some stuff now triangles, circles, angled deals, a rising moon, trees, mural, Harley Davidson stamp, hmmmmmmmmm J. |

John, check out http://shadesails.com/
ditto to what curapa said - the lateral load is horrific, depending on the size of the "sail". Make sure you get good structural engineering... I'd hate to see your sail fly away, taking a paito cover or deck with it! |

Re: Shade Sails
Remeber if you have less than four attachment points, you can't put twist in them, and they look crap and sag in the middle. They usually use 6inch steel pipe here for a freestanding unit. Don't know how thick they are or how deep they bury them but they gotta be deep. If you attach it to pergola it should be right. Same wind pressure as any other roofing. Don't know about using it in a handrail though. There's heaps of different materials they use from the open weave cheap stuff to the full pvc waterproof stuff. It would all need to be custom stitched and the cable aint cheap. What do you mean about a top flapping in the wind?

Re: Shade Sails
Flaping in the wind,ya know the way those things move, I just like the whole idea. Its a major given the stress has got to be right defentley steel posts, I am learning the triangle placement with the right twist they will work with each other making a pretty strong project.
Its not a low end kinda thing for sure but with the right look above and in the rial.....Man would it be cool. After I get one out The DeckMaster would have a little jump over the ever present compation. Rail systems all look the same but this one..... Hmmmmmm J. |
