Sealing fences

I put up close to 400 lin feet of 6' privacy fence on my property last year. The fence is now ready to be sealed.

My intention is to clean and PW the fence on a sat and seal it on a sunday (providing I have appropriate weather)

I had planned on sealing it with my paint sprayer, but a friend (contractor) said that I should consider using a landscape (bug/chemical) sprayer to reduce overspray.

This project is going to require 10-12 gals of sealant. I only have a small 1 gal sprayer so I will need to purchase a larger sprayer if I go with the bug sprayer. I am concerned that it will take alot longer using the bug sprayer than using my piston paint sprayer.

Will using a landscape sprayer actually be better than using a piston powered paint sprayer?

If the lanscape sprayer is the best option, do you ahve any recomendations for a 4-5 gallon version?

I am open to all advice.

thanks

thanks for the response, though i am a little lost at what you are saying.

"And my air less sprayer gos on fast that way the sprayer is only 400,00 x9 great for all painting.Or you can tent one for 100,00 a day"

what kind of sprayer are you using? a psiton driven professional sprayer? do you have to thin the stain?

what do you mean by 400,00 x9?

did you mean to say you can rent one for $100 a day? I already have a nice sprayer 3000 psi, .30 gpm

I am concerned more about ovberspray b/c there are a lot of nearby houses.

My comments based only on experience doing this only for myself - wouldn't bother with Bear or Thompsons or anybody like that for a fence stain. Around here due to the harsh UVs that stuff is good for 1 year. I would use something like Penofin Red Label.

Always have used a pump sprayer, for one reason is being able to really soak the fence (once again harsh UVs).

My opinion 400 ln ft of fencing is about a 20 minute job. (not really, but you know what I mean, 400 ln ft is really nothing. I doubt I would worry too much about it and just use the 1 gallong sprayer if that is what you have. Refilling it 12 times is not that big of a deal)

Now if I was doing this for a living, all the above would be a different story.

A pump up will kill your arms. Use a backpack sprayer (battery powered even better) and you'l be able to zip along with 4 gallons on your back.

DO NOT use anything from Home Depot or bLowe's. They sell acrylics and acrylics suck on exterior wood. Bakers Gray Away is excellent for wood fences and its very inexpensive. Finishes nicely too. There are pictures of it on my Restore-A-Deck website but I don't sell it to contractors as you can buy it direct without my markup.
