Screw Length For Fastening 2 X Ipe?

You 'mericans have get all the good hardware!

I need to face screw 2 x 6 and 2 x 8 Ipe for strair treads. Up here the longest colour matched stainless screw I can get is a 3" #7.

I don't think that's going to hold very well in a pt stringer with only an inch and a half of bite.

Do I glue and screw?

Any suggestions?

Rule of thumb, the fasteners should go into the frame the same leangth of the decking. Sounds like those screws will do that. I always use coustrustion adhesive when puting down ipe decking for a lot of reasons. J.

John, does the adhesive have any bonding issues with wet PT?

What brand do you use?

The 3" length is fine, but normally the guage would be a #8 or #10 for that length screw.

Kinda hard getting under those bottom stair treads eh?

Those screws you got are fine, like Mark said tho, a bigger diameter usually goes with that length.

usually all, but the last isn't a big deal.

but i learned a trick - if you can reach under to mark the bottom of the tread where it touches the stringer. you can screw the top of the deckmaster into the tread. then screw to the side on the stringer if you have access from the riser. i don't recommend trying to squeeze under from the back of the stringers. ;-) trust me

but like the others said - the 3" is probably fine as long as the lumber is not a true 2" thick.

You could always countersink and plug the holes. That will gain you a 1/2 inch. Plus it's a cleaner look. I recommend buying Ipe plugs though.....your plug cutters will thank you
