Screen Porch Ceiling-layers

I would like to install a nice ceiling w/ tongue and groove (stained facing down) on top of the rafters, then the shingles on top of the T&G, but I don't think its safe. Would a 1/2" nail be sufficient to hold architectural shingles on and not poke through the v-groove? I had considered installing 7/16" OSB on top of the tongue and groove.

What do you think?

That would be what I would do. I would also consider SS nails/screws all around for that project.

Are you using cedar for the rafters too? I am just asking because I met with a guy yesterday that wants a covered porch and I was thinking cedar rafters as well as the T&G.

I priced out cedar for the original bid, but the cost of materials was 2-3x's as much, so I bid it w/ PT.

Would it be best to put a layer of roofing paper between the wood?

Or, go first class. Use a larger dimension for your rafters/beams, wider span, 2" t&g. It will look better and you won't have the nail protrusion problem.

I just did a 1-1/2" fir t&g roof on open rafters then put 1/2" ply down, then felt, then shingles. The felt must go under the shingles not between the ply and decking. I've never seen a 1/2" roofing nail and wouldn't trust it if I did.

Re: Screen Porch Ceiling-layers

I inquired at my local building supply store (not big box store) for thicker T&G, but they did not have anything. Does anyone know of a source for thicker material in the Delaware area?

What part of DE? Down the here on the slower end I use American Cedar and Millwork for my specialty stuff. It's on Rt. 1 near Lewes.

americancedarmill.com (can't post a link yet)

They may have what your looking for or maybe mill it for ya. They are a little pricy but it is the beach.

My local place can order 2x6 V-groove tongue and groove at 99 cents/LF.
