Sag Free Gate On A Budget
I figured I would post these instructions on how to build a sag free gate on a budget. I am tired of seeing crappy gates all over the place that are falling apart. The gate doesn't take very long at all to build and it is very inexpensive.
I start by mitering the the tops and sides and putting one screw in each corner to hold them in place, then I lay my first diagonal across and mark the cut. I always run the diagonals from the bottom side to the upper top. I then lay another diagonal mirroring the one previously set into place. I mark both of the angles at the ends and the angles at the overlap on both boards.

I then notch the two diagonals to accept each other.

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
I set both diagonals back into place and start screwing the gate together. I put two toe-screws at each joint (on larger gates I add PL to the joints). Flip the gate over and repeat the screwing process.

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
Finish the gate off using a good set of 8" strap hinges.

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
It's really sad that this is actually something that many people need to see.

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
Shouldn't the ends of the cross members have double 45's so they catch both the horizontal and the vertical sides of the frame?...

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
Nice.
But personally, nothing beats one of those $60.00 date frame kits. Put one on my 48" wide cedar gate 9 years and go and the thing still closes absolutely true. |

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
I found these brackets to be the best, and you can make the gates any size you want!
The only thing is the screws that come with the kit are garbage, and should be replaced with deck screws! they cost about $40 for the kit and the hinges are welded on! takes about 15 min to make a perfect sag free gate!

Re: Sag Free Gate On A Budget
nope. cranbrook2 took care of that...

seems like a decent way to solidify the joint to me... Good thread, Curapa... I would think, in addition to the toe screws, dropping 6" HeadLocks into predrilled holes (marked in red) would help prevent too much twisting in the pt material. No offense to the bracket users but a deck pro can build 'em true and strong w/o metal brackets - Mac Last edited by BuiltByMAC; 06-20-2009 at 03:02 AM. |
