Routering Vinyl Posts On Site

Looking for the best way cut holes when steping down a fence. I was going to make a templet that would clamp on the post but before I do I was wondering how others do it.

I can't imagine a simplier or more fool proof way than a u-shaped template that you just secure with a bar clamp, and route out with a bearing guided bit.
