Replaceing Ceder Deck

I'm going to be rep;aceing a 1500 sf 2x4 ceder deck with either fiberon Tropics GV or Procell. The frameing is 24"oc so I'll be throwing in some lumber to make it 12" oc .
My question is .......
Does anyone see a problem with useing the fastening system on the
24" oc or am I gonna have to put it on each joist (12" centers).
And one more ?? is ...whitch one of these would be more stain resistant?
there are 6 Mature oak trees growing out of the deck.
Thanks

cant offer any input on fibron, but I haven't heard great things about it. Procell is hands down one of the best performing deck boards out there (not particularly fond of the colors) and cost comparibly to Ipe or cambara. Now let me get this straight, 1500sq' tearoff/add joists/redeck, fibron or procell are being used (5/4") with hidden fasteners, and you are asking if it is ok cut corners on the deck fastening. You just got the mercedes of deck projects both in size and material and you want to know if it is ok to n!gg@r it up by skimping on the fasteners

I believe that timbertech has some decking that will span 24", check out their web-site. I agree with Bone, you have a mother of a project ahead of you.

Also a quick thought- make sure the old & the new joists are the same height, you might need to plane or shim some of them.
You've got old, dried out lumber & new, wet lumber every other foot...

I dont consider 1500sf a big deal.
The next one will be 4-5000 sf tear-off 5/4 X 4 mohogany.Thats gonna be a big deal
timber tec (besides color) has a 12" clearance issue
Whereas Fiberon has 8" clearance and I MO the Mahogany and Jatoba are the best looking

And I dont consider asking.....
Code:
Does anyone see a problem with useing the fastening system on the
24" oc or am I gonna have to put it on each joist (12" centers).
Now how that is cutting corners or skimping is beyond me.
It's a simple question.
Yes you must put a clip every 12" .
Or
No you can do it every 24"
Since The question was asked ,I got hold of the dealer and YES it has to be fastened to every joist.
But thanks for your input anyway Bone Saw

Duse, timbertech has 3 different lines of decking, I am not sure if all 3 require the 12" off the ground. Also check Elk, they have decking that will span 24".

I dont trust 24" O.C. with anything... Dont want thier "larger" fried over feeling bounce on the brand new deck thinking "Guess I am not going to use the same guy he did, this thing will snap under my weight"

Robert, I never have and do not have plans to try it. Some of the interlocking stuff from timbertech looks like it could do the job......expensive gamble if it does not pass the test. Best bet might be to check the deflection before starting the project. My neighbor used Trex 24" oc, funny watching the boards sags when she walks across it.

Re: Replaceing Ceder Deck

the extra cost of going 16 OC makes no sense to go 24 when it is your name on it..

Re: Replaceing Ceder Deck

Timbertech does have one that spans 24", it is their normal design, but about 50% thicker. it also cost $1.00 more per foot. It is less expensive to add joists.

I did the math on those once and came to the same conclusion... I think people who use it as a selling point are too lazy to add a few more joists in.

Hey Robert
Just a quick question to you and the other "Deck Builders" out there. Do ever frame your decks at 19.25" o.c.? Thats the diamond on your tape mearure. We use it all the time for our decks. Surface fasteners look better spaced, your can get in between the joists easier and it uses less lumber than 16" o.c.
Just wondering.........

There is no 5/4" plank out there that is warrented past a 16"oc res or 12"oc com, you could get away with it with ipe 5/4 if you do that all the time with 5/4 comp, than you have alot of decks out there with voided warrenties

Ditto.
And as said before, the only one I'm aware of is Timbertech's 2x6.

Re: Replaceing Ceder Deck

Never used the 19.2" (otherwise called "19 and diamond") unless you are doing HUGE decks it will make a differance of what?? 2-3 joists... Wow $60... I have no problem selling that extra $60.

I can see where it would be nice for getting in between but I KNOW for sure I would not use it for anything other than 2x6 Redwood or 2x6 PT. But even then 2-3 more joists is not a big deal at all.

Ditto!

Why skimp on a few joists?
