Redwood Deck Creaking HELP!

Please help!!
2 years ago I built approximately 20’ X 25’ redwood deck. My first deck, and It is after 1 year creaking badly all over. The wood is moving at the screws. I believe because I pre-drilled the screw holes, which was probably unnecessary. Also the lumber was still pretty fresh, a little wet.
Here’s how I constructed...
-Pier blocks 4’ apart.
-4 X 6 PT girders
-2 X 6 PT joists and rim
-2 X 6 redwood planks, pre-sprayed with water sealer
-#10, 3” deckmate screws-pre-drilled with 1/8” drill-bit
It was fantastic and problem free, until about 1 year later, it starting creaking when walked on. It quickly got worse, and out of desperation, I sunk most of the screws about 1/8” down. This solved the issue, for a short time, but then came back. It has been hot in the 80’s and 90’s this summer, and worse than ever. After rains, the creaks are minimal. But in the heat, it’s just embarrassing.
The framing is very sound and solid, the creaks are at the redwood top boards, where they move up and down along the screws. I think I messed up by pre-drilling the screw holes to avoid splitting. What is the fix for this???
My brother is a contractor, and said I could use clips under the planks to secure them, and pull out the screws and dip them in liquid nails to prevent them from moving...I have no Access under the deck, so I would need to pull up each board to do this. That’s a ton of work!
Other option I was thinking was replacing the screws with #12, 3 1/2” or 4” Exeterior screws, but if my problem was caused by pre-drilling, wouldn’t I have the same issue eventually??
I may decide to replace all planks, but this would cost me about 2K!
Any ideas???please help!

Re: Redwood Deck Creaking HELP!

You must pre-drill redwood or the chances are it will split. Tighten the boards up again with the top screws and see what happens. It has been hot and the wood has been shrinking.

Pull the screws and replace them with one size larger.

Or add a screw in the middle.

Or put a screw into the space at an angle possibly with a Kreg jig.

This stuff was what I considered my cull pile. I have 2500bf that is all 1" thick 21 feet long and 10 to 12" wide. Roughly 250 growth rings per 10" I have 1000bf that is all 10"x3" x 21 feet long. Also have about 2000bf of 10/4 sugar pine and another 1000bf of clear 8/4 WRC.

Re: Redwood Deck Creaking HELP!

All the Eichler homes in and around San Rafael/Lucas Valley are built with redwood siding, redwood 4x4's, and some have the most beautiful rough sawn redwood inside the homes. Even my own house has redwood siding, built in the early 70's. I re-purposed the redwood shelving that I removed. My mud sills are old growth redwood.

It's almost impossible to find. I have turned down pretty good offers on the redwood.

Most of my redwood is stamped clear VG PALCO lumber Scotia, CA.

Very interesting read on the history of that company/town.

I bet this wood was sawn 50 years ago at least. Probably 1500 to 2000 year old trees.

Re: Redwood Deck Creaking HELP!

^That is a nice looking load of logs actually. Fairly large, and straight. Gone are the days of old growth logging. NO ONE should be cutting BIG trees anymore. Leave the BIG trees for propagation and for people to admire. Hiking into Tall Trees Park leaves me in awe.

Scotia is an interesting town to visit, but not very much to see.

palco long gone. pretty much the #1 redwood mill in it's hay day.

scotia is a very cool little town. used to be a company owned (palco) town.

scotia inn had a great bar & restaurant but has also closed up.

lots of history in the area.
