A Re-skin Knowledge Tidbit

When you reskin a deck, often times (most usually) the existing framing is less than perfect. I take great pains to straighten my rim joists and box beams to make trimming the deck boards simple and exact when I frame a deck.

On the reskin I did today, the rim joist had a 3/8" bow in it. I snapped a line and made a straight cut. The rim joist was sticking out beyond my cut 3/8" in some spots. Not good...

I remedied the situation very quickly by zipping a power planer along the rim joist to knock it back to where it need to be. It worked really well.

Normally, I will persuade the offending joists prior to installing the decking, but this sucker wasn't going anywhere easily. I improvised with the planer and it's actually easier than screwing around with the framing. Go figure.

I figured I'd pass this along. God knows sometimes I overlook the most common-sense approaches...

Gotta love the planer, just remember to cat's paw or nail punch those 12 penny nails first....
