Raised Beds With Composite Decking?

Anyone have experience in making them? Any great ideas on a cool design?
Structural concerns?
Pros, cons?
Got pictures?

My wife wants pictures. Well she really wants the stinking beds. Get my drift?

Hook a brother up

Hey Gus, keep in mind that these were done with leftovers to hide some really ugly 6x6 timbers, but it's something.

I like those, scraps or not. I have some spare boards lying around I need to find a use for. I was going to make some benches but I may do some planters or beds now.

You can also just go to your supplier and get a ton of samples to make those for nearly free.

Re: Raised Beds With Composite Decking?

hey Gus, composites have zero structural intergrity. as soon as the sun heats'em up it's sag/bow /droop city that is of course you have them supported 16" o.c. and then whats the point right???

Thanks for that quick reply Lone.
You have an inexhaustible arsenal of photos in your holster don't you?

Do you guys think I could stack 2 rows of decking and create a bed about 6' X 3', a couple vertical pieces in the mid span, without a whole lot of bowing?

What if I drove the verts in the ground a little as a stake?

If they are getting filled with soil, I would back them with landscape timbers. When you cap them they disappear. HD had 8' lengths here today for under $2. Composites are too floppy in my opinion.

Re: Raised Beds With Composite Decking?

Well I might just end up with 2 X 12 redwood boxes.

I might get 10 yrs out of them. My problem with that is that I hate building things that will not last as long as it took the tree to grow.

Feel me? Living around the redwoods makes it even harder for me. But what is a guy to do? She wants what she wants. And when she is happy I stand a chance at being happy.

I have been using railroad ties for years, may not be as nice looking as composite. It is nice to be able to kneel on them to work in the garden.

Nice looking garden RC.

I think my wife would be concerned about the creosote somehow showing up in the salad. Me, not so much. I am clearly not the boss of this outfit.
