You have to know your LOCAL codes. There is probably someone on here from L.A. that can help you. Give it some time.

For my surrounding area it's 42" for a second level deck. But, like Teetor said, you should really check your local codes. A quick, anonymous phone call to your local building department should have someone tell you in about 30 sec. over the phone.

the IRC says 36". Obviously that's residential. Commercial (IBC) is 42". This assumes you use the I codes where you are.

Funny thing about Cali is they are in love with the UBC. More than likely modified.

Don't know about California modifications to the UBC but prior to our being on the I codes we used the UBC here in NM. Same requirement, 36" residential, 42" commercial.

I believe the I codes were built on the UBC.

ICC thought up the I codes. UBC was another council. However the I codes are thought up by a international council so as I have noticed nothing really changed between IRC and UBC except new seismic standards for building practice's.

And as far as I know they will not be revising the UBC. So Cali will have to do that on there own.
