Quickbooks Question For The Deck/fence Guys
I have come to the sad realization that I really don't know what I'm doing in quickbooks & not letting it do the things it can for me. So, I have decided to contact a CPA to get it set up & show me how to use it properly. My only concern is that the CPA doesn't know how to tailor it to my specific line of work, mostly decks & outdoor & backyard structures. I'm trying to at least get my list of items thrown together to give him/her an idea of what I need & am looking for. I figure they can put together my chart of accounts off of that.
Here's the million dollar question is would anyone be willing to share their list of items with me (with any vital info removed of course) so I can use it for a reference. I don't plan on copying it straight away, just want to see how you have it set up, how detailed you get & what items you have that I might not have thought of. Thanks in advance! Dan |

Re: Quickbooks Question For The Deck/fence Guys
You don't want this list to be in your chart of accounts, many contractors make that mistake. Make them "items" and direct them to 5 Cost of Goods Sold GL accounts called Material, Labor, Equip, Subcontract and Other. You should also direct them to the income account so you get profitility reports for your jobs.

Re: Quickbooks Question For The Deck/fence Guys
Dan, do you get JLC? They do a lot of stuff on setting up Quickbooks. I thought those were by Quenda Behler-Story but I just googled that and see I'm wrong, she does the legal stuff (she's a good writer).
I don't think you should go to a CPA to do what you want, you should go to a business consultant / bookeeper - someone like Sarah.. Marty |

Re: Quickbooks Question For The Deck/fence Guys
Go to the quickbooks site, they have all kinds of stuff in their forums, buy the disks to learn, go to their schools they put on, its all good stuff, there are lots of people that know this software, it is very user friendly. A CPA, that would no how to show you what you need to know, would be very hard to find and very expensive.
