Privacy Walls

How are you guys building privacy walls these days?

We usually run the posts down to footings in the ground to stabilize the wall. I don't think it makes any sense to take a 6' 4x4 and attach it to 7.5" of joist and expect it to be solid.

Hey, if there's a better way, I'm all ears.

Any cool designs you've come up with? We usually just do shadow box style for economy's sake but I'm sick of them.

Re: Privacy Walls

Hey Greg. If you look on my website, I have a number of privacy screens that you could copy or modify as you wish.

For structure, we usually mount the 4x4 post to the header AND a joist, or if a joist isn't convenient, we block it on at least 1 other side. Makes it nice and strong, and won't move. We did an 8' high x 24 ft long screen last summer, and even though 3 weeks ago we had a massive windstorm, not a peep from the customer.
It's really not necessary to sink the post in concrete.
