Question Privacy fence nail question!

I've gotten into installing privacy fences. When hanging the stringers, I am currently using a Porter Cable FC-350 framing nailer to face nail the 2x4's to the 4x4 posts. The best nails I've been able to find for this gun are 3", hot dipped, galvanized, ring shanks. I feel that the 3" length doesn't provide quite enough holding power.

What do most fence contractors use to hang the stringers? I wish I had a 3-1/2" ring shank HDG or at least a 3-1/4". I see many options longer lengths offered with smooth shank and not galvanized. Any suggestions on how to attach the 2x4's quickly and with more holding power? Where to find longer, ring shank, HGD, nails??? I really don't want to switch to screws considering the speed of the nail gun.

Any help would be appreciated...

I've been using the metric plutonium nails with decent results. They're pretty hard to find lately, though.

Tell me about it - I ran out last month & my supplier has seemingly disappeared off the face of the planet....

Next best thing though I guess for the OP would be these http://www.swansecure.com/framing_an...ng__shank.html

Where have you been getting the metric plutonium nails? The Swan Secure nails look good, but they are a little pricey being stainless. Are there any out there in a 3-1/2" or 3-1/4" hot dipped galvanized (to fit the FC-350)? That would be cheaper... I'm just not sure that stainless is neccessary. I just hate to spend $200+ on 1000 stainless nails when I've been getting the 2000 3" HDG for $55.

I use Duo-Fast RCN-60/225 coil nailers with 1-7/8" 0.86 ring shank HDG's for the pickets. I typically am using ACQ PT pine lumber.

Check Harbor Freight, they have them on sale from time to time.

I see you guys are in rare form today.

I have a FR-350 and use the 3" HD ring shank nails.

Do you use 2 nails at the end of each 2x4? I've been using 3... Had trouble with any backing out over time or in moderate winds?

2.5 should be fine, stringers should be 2x12's not 2x4's

I can't say I've ever seen a 6 ft. tall wooden privacy fence with 2x12's run horizontally to support the pickets. Sounds like Bonnie and Clyde overkill to me.

Open or closed risers?

Seriously pressure treated or cedar? Paslode makes Hot Dipped Galvanized PLUS! and stainless, you can order them right online and have them delivered to your front door.
