Whats the best way to get thru big rocks when digging post holes. I have a auger on wheels do the carbide cutters work?

Re: Post Holes In Rock

I know the fence companies around me tend to use a tow-behind jackhammer air compressor with a rotary rock drill.

Re: Post Holes In Rock

I use a jackhammer and if that does not move the rock I will drill 3 holes with a hammer drill. I then insert rebar into the holes and epoxy them in. Then pour the pier as normal.

A controlled Detonation. Depending on how hard that rock is you could burn through several carbide bits. Its my understanding those bits aren't cheap. Plan b. Find a guy who has a bobcat or tractor with the hydralic jack hammer mounted on it.

Ps.....C4 or RDX

Re: Post Holes In Rock

If it's pretty flat on top of the rock, and the rocks just to big to move, a wet core hole saw will do the trick.

Re: Post Holes In Rock

I just installed 1000 feet of split rail fence....500 feet of which was solid granite.

We used a 220 cfm compressor at 10,000 feet in altitude and a 90 lb jackhammer...some holes too up to an hour to do. it sucked, but it got done and done right.......

Good luck, I feel for you.....
