Porch Frame/ Reference Material

recently built 10 by 20 pt basic deck for back of house - researched with books from library and internet - found 2006 code info online etc - permitted and inspected ok - porch deck wanted for front of house - after more research find some aspects of deck that passed inspect that probably shouldnt have - doubt in my knowledge and code dept sets in - so can you recommend any books / reference material / internet info sites using methods that you actually use - in particular the porch needed is going to be 35' long and 5' wide, 3' tall - would like deck material to run perpendicular to house - ideas welcome for best framing method - thank you - oo3

Run your floor joists parallel to the house, carrying beams perpendicular to the house.

Re: Porch Frame/ Reference Material

yes loneframer that was one of my basic ideas - i know i should give more info - my concern would then be how to support/attach the next to house portion of beam - i am not to comfortable with deck/porch only being 5' wide and being freestanding supported by post on footings - especially as i would like the outer post to be set back at least 1' - and the inner because of house footing would probably have to be set 1' in also- my other idea was to have a outer parallel to house beam - inner combo ledger beam attached to house with perp joists infilled by parallel joists - hope that makes sense, i could draw it better than i could write it - and i guess its good to see there is some sort of humor here - thank you - oo3

Think more in terms of flush beams supported at the house with heavy duty hangers, your outer posts will be fine set back from the front edge of deck. Joists can be hung between the flush beams.

So we're building this deck about 3yrs ago. I got three guys with me and my brother calls me, asks if I can give his son a job for the summer. I say ok. He shows up, green as can be. Day two my lead carpenter says to him-" I see you looking at the other guy, get lost, he's mine" Nephew quits next day. To this day I have never told him it was just a joke. Talk about nieve!

That's funny. I know one thing, it makes for some long days if you can't take a joke with the people I've worked with over the years. One guy had a fetish for setting people on fire by dropping cigarettes in their Hoodies.
