Never heard of poplar for exteriors. Paint grade millwork maybe.

Tulip poplar was a choice cabin log.
It was used a lot for board and batten
around here, and held up well even
when not painted or stained.
Quite a few of the older barns here about
still have poplar siding.
Horizontal......?

I have seen old growth poplar on homes over 100 years old. New growth poplar won't last 3 years outside with a fantastic paint job.

The poplar decking has been "toasted". Vacuum kiln dried to 0% moisture and then heated to 160* and re-moisturized to 6-8%. This drastically modifies the cell structure. Makes it pretty durable to the weather and it looks like Walnut.

I beleive that is one of the thermally modified woods out there. Just can't remember who makes it.

Yeah, because it is just what my siding is and all my exterior trim is.

Of course my house is 120 years old.

Just started working on the exterior of another farm house and guess what? Yup all Poplar.

New plantation growth stuff=junk except for trim and cabinets.

I have a few samples of it. It is not a hardwood, and costs about the same as cedar. I haven't been tempted to use it.

Exactly.

It will last, but I'm not entirely sure how it will last laying flat or it being a soft wood.

Too soft for a floor of any kind.

Poplar is a hardwood, it is just not a hard wood.
