Painting Pressure Treated Posts
New one for me...
The dog eared privacy fence I just built utilizes pt posts that actually show...normally we do the fences like everyone else and the posts don't show at all......this client wanted something different.....and I also agreed to paint and stain the fence, something I never do....but I have an overhead monster to feed so I'm going to feed him. Advice on painting the pt posts? I am letting them sit to air out....how long? She is supplying the exterior paint to match her house.....I plan to put one coat of kilz on first...necessary? Thanks in advance....pics to follow....

I did a search on this recently, I'm looking at painting a PT porch, here's what I found:

Re: Painting Pressure Treated Posts
Stain it .... painting might present a problem later on down the road ...most PT lumber is wet unless you use a KDAT post...Kiln Dried After Traement...
But I am not a painter ...that is just my opinion ...and also is what my teatment facility recommends... KDAT..is not cheap |

All the painters I've talked to use oil based primer because of the chemicals in the wood.

Moisture content should be in 12% range. You need a moisture meter to test the wood. I don't think painting is a good idea. Prime with oil based product like Cabot's Problem Solver. One-Two topcoats Cabot's solid stain.

Thanks guys.....I may need to face the posts first because I doubt we will get anywhere near the color she wants using solid stain....or can we?

Re: Painting Pressure Treated Posts
Maybe not. Cabot's makes a product called ProUV which you might want to look into. They have a large color choice. Pick up sampler literature and show her the colors. The retailer can probably match the color fairly closely but the finish won't have the sheen of an enamel
