OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
i built a deck and screwed up the 6x6 posts. when i build a deck i get 6x6s's long enough to extend above the deck to carry the handrails. i hate a wobbly handrail and this is as tight as you can get it. i also run the posts about 4" above the handrail so i can break the top rail and fight the typical warping top rails that look horrible. before i do this, i set my saw at a 45degree angle and make a cut all the way aroung the post 1" down from the top. here is the problem. all was going well until i made a cut and realized that my saw table wasn't locked and cut one at 52degrees. i stopped before cutting all the way through and was able to recut it correctly at 45degrees, but, there is a notch about 2" deep at 52degrees. how can i fix this notch? the ho doesn't mind but it just bugs me. it is going to be near impossible to change the entire post since it is notched for the bands and the deck boards and they are about 16' long. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. if i can't come up with anything else, i am going to mix some glue with some pt sawdust and work into the notch.

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
Cut all post tops flat 3" above cap rail and drop post caps on 'em...spendy proposition, I know.
Cut all post tops flat 3" above cap rail and run a router around the top to round off the edges. Cut that one post off at height halfway through the cap rail and fab a fakie post top. Cap rail will hide seam. Unless I'm completely missing what you are looking at - got a pic? Mac |

Notch or Saw cut? Sure do the glue and saw dust plus a treated wedge then sand smooth after it dries.

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
What about swapping a new post in it's place and using that one on a future deck where it doesn't need to be so long?

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
If you can put all the post at 52. Thats what i would do. Then you just lose the time.

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
Cut 52's on all of them, and start predrilling your screw holes.
Also, if you brad nailed those 2x2's on your gonna have problems. The 2x's will begin to warp and eventually separate from the rails, drunken people falling can easily bust through them when they are only connected with brads, upgrade to screws or at minimum some ring shanked nails. I am also curious as to why one spindle is right next to the post and the opposite is 1 1/2" away.

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
I would cut your post down and run a chamfer around the top with a router. Then do it to all the other posts too. I would also fix the split top rail on the left side of your pic.

Re: OOPS!!! I Messed Up!!!
Epoxy all day. If the deck is going to get a solid body stain no worries. If not try like the marble guys do and mix some of your saw dust into a clear epoxy.
