Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
The owner of the first pt deck I built decided to paint their deck white. I told them to let it sit one year then paint it next summer but they went ahead and painted it the following week. Needless to say the deck turned green in spots and started to peel. Which caused them to never maintain the deck. It is now completely discolored and dirty. Looks like %^$*!
Unfortunately the owner is my Mother in-law and on at least one Sunday a Month I have to grill on that deck. It really stinks to see work you do not being taken care of. Even if it is for a client that pays you well(free bee). That deck does nothing for me but hurt my reputation. I instruct my family not to advertise that I built the deck because the average Joe will only base his opinion by what he knows. Which is appearance and not quality construction that was ruined by not following directions or proper up keep. This is why I am limiting my work as much as possible to clients that will take care of their investments to help me maintain a positive reputation.

I raised and re-routed every pipe in the basement of my first home to make the space useable. The house was about 100 years old and the pipes were put in at different times and every guy just hung his lower than the last guy. When I was done, I drywalled the ceiling and had 6'-4" headroom everywhere you could walk. The basement went from a scary, dangerous dungeon to the nicest rooms in the house (office, rec-room, powder room). I did such a good job that my In-laws bought the place from me. A month later, My father-in-law hires his out-of-work nephew to put in a powder room and a gas heater on the first floor. He runs the pipes crooked, at eye level (my eyes anyway, 6' tall) and right in front of a doorway. *&^%$# #%&*%@!!! I can't even go down there anymore and I have to point out that I had nothing to do with that mess when somebody compliments my handywork while visiting. They also had a closet built and some trim work done in the dining room. Some clown used 2 1/8" window casing as base moulding when the rest of the house has 6"+ base moulding and he put the door casing on backwards (fat end in). I spent five years transforming that dump into a showplace and they let these morons mess it all up! Don't get me started. Apparently, not everyone cares about quality and craftsmanship and those of us that do are some sort of throw-back from another time. Atleast that's how I feel, especialy in my trade (pipefitting). The guys who throw in a lot of crooked, leaking pipe as fast as possible are praised by the project managers and the guy that does it right is made to feel like a load. How can it be better to do a fast crappy job and then have somebody go back and fix it, than it is to do it the right way from the start? I know how you feel, there's nothing you can do about it. Most people are slobs. |

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
I have a 6 year old cedar deck with peeling stain. What would be the best way to remove the old stain and reapply new stain or sealer?

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
Don't use Sikkens. They don't stand behind there product. They give you every BS line they can think of. The stuff peeled off my new cedar deck in 8 months. I did everything by the book. The stuff is junk

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
I cant belive it, almost 20,000 have hit this topic.
For me its TWP. I use the 100 series. Its a build coat finish two on right away let it sit. The next spring two more after an oxalic wash. Good for 3/5 years. JonMon |

Siding Guy just had to get his two cents in, even if it was four years later.

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
A friend who builds timber frame structures recommended sikkens cetol for my cedar deck. However, the sikkens site says I need to treat all 6 sides of the wood. My deck is on the second floor and sits right on top of a concrete roof structure and I can't access the underside of the deck. What type of stain/treatment would be recommended? It took a lot of time to build this deck, so I want it to look great for a long time, and I don't mind doing the necessary prep work.

it's the aluminum and glass that covers the exterior of commercial buildings and high-rise buildings.

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
Thanks Cory !!
I wonder if this post will go to 30,000 ??? got to be a record. Cory this is how I do it >>> TWP 100 series I use twp 116 on ipe. Two coats on right away, twp calls this wet on wet. Then just keep building coats using the sprit of a sound mind. I have built up a simi gloss finish on masenranduba with no lifting or peeling after 10 years and you never have to strip it<< If your using western red cedar it's even easier. Do not look for this advise on the can or the Gemini site. The first coat of anything will not last all that long. Never put finish on all four sides of any decking. These guy's sell a twp clone > www.woodrich-brand.com << Not a bad product either they have good customer support I have used it and give them a big thumbs up. Its just that I can get twp116 at $26 a gal over here. JonMon www.deckmastersllc.com Last edited by John Hyatt; 08-18-2011 at 05:29 PM. |

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
John, I tried the Woodrich on some samples of ipe and it did not fare any better then Penofin or ATO, as far as longevity. Single coat only.

Alway I tell you Nino Pequeno. The first coat of anything is not going to last on anything laying flat to the sun. It's a Build Coat Finish. The advantage of twp 100 series and to a lesser degree WR is You Can Build Coats. Trust me this is very rare. JonMon www.deckmastersllc.com |

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
What's your reasoning, John? I've recently coated a couple of PT decks up, down and sideways, and am going to be watching to see how they do. All too often I see mold growing on the underside, even on elevated decks with no airflow blockage at all.

Because water WILL get into the decking boards and then... never get out...

Re: New Cedar Deck, Best Sealer?
If all four sides are sealed,as it were, the top side will break down first, Laying flat to the Sun as the decking is, so water can get thru and be traped inside the wood.
Thats my reasoning but when I put down most anykind of wood decking I use constrction adhesive. If finish was on the bottom of the decking it would not work. Also I tried it on a big spread out Redwood Deck. Back then I wasent into SA lumber. That deck finish did not last any longer than the many I did not prefinish or last any longer or any less. When installing pre finished decking it gets a lot of scraping, draging, well ya know. The finish is going to be damaged some what, and a lot on top so a person has to fix that. With syp pt decking it hardley matters what makes that stuff go is the Sun the twisting warping and cracking will happen no matter how its fastened or what its finished with mildew / mold is the least of its problems. It hardley matters with SA decking either far as the finish goes its all cosmetic anyway. That's the way I look at it any way Tinster. John www.deckmastersllc.com |
