Just about have this little thing wrapped up. All I have left is a step off the front opening which will be set on two 12" piers & tied back into the rim joist. 26'x12' all PT with powdercoated balusters. Started out real messy. Ground was soaking wet from recent rain & almost got my mini-skid stuck a few times. It was my first time dealing with the aluminum balusters & I got the rail height a little too low. Only about 1 1/2" between the bottom rail & the decking. I assumed they were sized for a 36" rail. Nope, 38". Also was the first time using the cedar Kreg plugs for the rails. Got some great production rates off this thing. All in all, customer is happy & was taking about having me build a screened hot tub enclosure next year.

I usually do on the higher end decks I do, but didn't on this one. It was a "budget" deck. I marked & spaced the rim screws straight & evenly, so they still look good even though exposed.
Nice work Danno,
Did you attach your rail posts to the deck with your Kreg too? It doesn't look like the posts run through?
Steve
Post run through the decking & are fully blocked & thru bolted to the framing. This was probably the tightest I have ever notched my decking around the posts. I was planning on installing some base trim, but it's so tight it doesn't even need it. Even after shrinkage it'll be minimal.
How long did the job take you? How many workers?
Looks nice and neat. The top plate on the rail looks good.
I'm at 34 hours right now, with maybe another 3 to go. Should have been a few less, but had terrible site conditions which slowed footings & some trouble drilling the foundation for the ledger. I'd say ideally I should be at about 30 right now.
Just one employee, me.
I like to break the edges of the cap rail with a 3/8 Radius round over bit. Makes it look "softer".
Nope. All pressure treated. Everything is MCQ except for the decking, that is ACQ. I was pretty pleased with the coloring of it. It really does look like cedar though. Only cedar on the deck is the Kreg plugs.
OK. You guys can flame me if you want. 30 years in the business and I have no idea what a "kreg plug" is. Please, enlighten me.
He used a Kreg jig to bore those screw holes on his 2x4 rails in the guard rails. The Kreg plugs are just that , plugs that fit into the counter bore. All proprietary stuff from the jig manufacturer.
You can see them in one of the guard rail close ups.
Now that should end that 30 yr streak. I still have not seen Star Wars, I'm keepin that streak alive though.

29 years, and i didnt know either. Guess i never needed a kreg plug
Stone, Gene, not to rip the thread but i just discovered Kregs 3 mos. ago. if you google it and ck. the vids. you'll be at the hdwre. store the next day!!! killer tool simple to use!!
That looks real good, and you made great time on it. I do not have a lot of experience with ACQ, MCQ and MCA treated material. I figure it all moves the same as the old CCA material. Is that the case?

In that case Danno,
You did a very good job!

Looken good Danno!! Just wondering a couple of things. Did you use the factory conectors on the alum pipe or make your own? and Man that seems like a lot of money in jigs/time when A person could use simple plugs/orbital for the same effect. John Mon

Yea, I used the factory connectors. I made a jig out of PVC trim & bored holes the size of the connector in it 4" o.c. on my mill. Clamped my rail to it, dropped in the connectors & screws & went to town. Did this in my shop. Cut the rails to length at the job site. Kreg'd them & put them in.
The Kreg is nice & quick. Clamp & drill. Takes about 30 seconds to do a set of holes, set up & drill time.
No idea what'll happen with shrinkage, first time I've used the Kreg plugs. I think they will be fine though.
