My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

Can someone tell me from experience how long Australian Timber Oil finish should last on an IPE deck. Mine lasts 1 season but I thought it was supposed to last much longer. I'm using the mahogany flame color. Is there a better product than ato?

BTW: same thing on my mahogany hand rails - 1 season.

Have you tried TWP products? http://www.woodsealants.com/

I never used it but I heard from people who do use it, they said, they will never change to anything else.

Give it a try if you want.

1 season is about right. Once you get to the third or fourth season, you may be able to skip a year. If twp isn't available, you could try Messmers.

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

Yo, ato is not a long lasting finish on the S American Lumber

For 10 years or so I have been using twp 100 series on ipe, garapa, masanranduba. This is a build coat finish they recomend a wet on wet( man I love how that sounds) that is two coats right away.

There is a twp corp 20 miles from Butler Manor we have talked a lot and they do not agree with the way I have been doing it, even after watching me do it. Anyway if you build coats say with the 116 two coats in the first week one more in a week or so you will be good for 3/4 years. This finish never requires stripping. An oxalic acid wash/cleaning after the first year and one more coat will give you a simi gloss with no pealing/lifting or fade.l The more coats the longer it takes to set up good weather /working in the sprit of a sound mind will give a very long lasting finish on Ipe.

You will have to strip the ato off to put twp on.

I dont want any S*It(ttt over this !!! I know it works. J.

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

If you got a year out of one coat of ATO then you did good, around here it won't last that long.

I'm of the same opinion as John, TWP is the way to go on ipe. Ipe is so hard it won't take much stain with only one coat, multiple coats are needed to make it last.

Never used the TWP or heard of it. I've used both ATO and Penofin on SA hardwoods. How does TWP rate on Ipe compared to ATO? Has anyone thinned any of these products out so it soaks in the tight grain better?

There is no problem with twp taking to ipe, just put a brush load on a short of ipe and try to get it off. Do not thin twp. J.

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

Like all oil based stains twp is all ready thin, no need to thin it more. The only thing I've done is mixed colors to tone them down or add a little more color.

Sounds like the Twp is the way to go then. What's the best way to strip off the leftover ATO? And is there anywhere to buy twp other than online?

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

TWP contains petro but its a resin base. It will take md 80 to get the ato off combined with an oxalic base brightner. These guys sell that stuff www.woodrich-brand.com They also make a twp knockoff that I have used with some sucesss but the test is sill out however it looks good after a year or so. TWP 100 series is sold in local paint stores over here. J.

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

please read this...
there is no one coat sealer or oil that will last on Ipe. it is too dense to absorb enough oil at any one time to last. You need to build up several discreet light coats.

simply put oil it many times unitl it last

I share the same experience as you, apply 2nd coat at 6 months, then again at 1 year then yearly for the next couple, after that you should get 2 or more years between coats ( with pennofin ) you could pre- treat with a wood conditioner like penatrol to help absorbtion.

We have red wood and Cedar, somewhat affordable. Ipe , YOU PAY!
Last deck I used Cumaro,It was a little cheaper than UPAY. I'm tired of the
severe checking and Hi maintenance [ once a year]. I'm back to clear or b grade redwood.

Driftwood, yes you can get lower grades of redwood cheaper then ipe in No. Ca., but they don't compare in any way. Ipe is so much better. A clear heart grade of redwood is more then ipe. But ipe ages much better then redwood.

The Redwood out there today is not the same Virgin Redwood of 20 years ago. It is illegal in the U.S. to cut Virgin Redwood. The Redwood for sale today is a genetically altered cross between A Cedar tree & Redwood tree, this is done because of the slow growth of the Redwood tree. ( just some usless information I picked up about 5 years ago)

Re: My Ipe Deck Finish Won't Last

Ipe' Is a very hard exotic wood which takes a deep penetrating oil based stain. Some of the best ones to use are:
Armstrong-Clark
Messmers
ready Seal

With the softer woods I always give a 2 year warranty and hook up for a maintenance package with them. There is no silver bullet stain that will last longer because remember it is something that will be lived on, not around. Foot traffic, furniture, BBQ grills with the occasional grease and ambers that fly on it, rain, UV rays and depending where you live, Ice and snow.

If you were looking for a deck that will be maintenance free, you had better get a different line of thinking because there is no such thing. It would be like getting your teeth checked and getting a good report and not going back only to discover a few years down the road that you have cavities that have caused tooth decay. If you do a good clean/strip/pHbalance/oil based stain then in two years you will only have to clean it and do an re-coat of the stain. It would be less expensive than the first go around. If you choose to let it ride and hope for the best then you will be replacing the deck and still doing the process I described.

Do not fall back on the thinking of the lumber yard having a protective coating placed on the wood. It is no more than parafin wax and thats only to help it when it is being stacked before it ships. It will wash off in a few months. If you stain over this what you will get is a leopard like spotting effect where the stain will not penetrate. Looks like a real eye sore.

Do yourself a favor. Hire a professional to evaluate your deck care needs.
