Mangaris Diamond Hardwood

Have any of y'all installed Mangaris Diamond decking? (my search came up empty)

I've gotten samples & pricing from JW Lumber here in San Diego for a project. I like the look better than the Ipe (which the customer has already accepted), and the price is lower (I'd pass along savings to cover add-ons).

Beautiful color, slight grain & sheen like mahogany.

The project is an irregular, 20" high, 300sqft deck surrounding an above-ground spa, hung off the back of the house (adding 2 french doors for access to the deck). Planning to use IQ fasteners with 5/4 material.

BTW, thanks much to members who linked the "Prescriptive Residential Deck Construction Guide" - some really good info.

It looks like mahogany because it is mahogany.

I have not built any decks with it, but did sell some to a fella in Galveston when I was in lumber sales. He built a 2500 sq. ft. ocean front deck and was quite pleased with it.

I did make some cool looking shadow boxes with it for a CCA banquet tho.

Re: Mangaris Diamond Hardwood

Here are some pix of the completed job -

Total deck just under 300 sqft, Diamond Mangaris (5/4x6), top screwed with 1-5/8" Guarddogs, plugged with Ipe

Job included BBQ cabinet, seat wall, firepit, 11' long wall wall w/ gate, deck & cover, irrigation. Homeowners did all the softscape.

Wrapping the skirt around with mitered corners onto the step risers was a little tricky, but they came out tight. No handrails/railing was per owner - city code requires both for decks only over 30"

Homeowners love the project, came in a little over $30k.

before/during

I took a number of shots before, keeping in mind what "views" would be money shots after the job was done - here are just a couple

That is a total backyard renovation - looks like a million bucks! That'll be a good one to put Before/After pics in your portfolio...
Yeah, the mitered corners on the picture framed steps are very nice. Good craftsmanship shown there!

Re: Mangaris Diamond Hardwood

Alot of that south east asia Philio lumber is marketed as mahogony.

The stuff looks real good in the lumber yard covered area. After a very short time it starts to surface check like mad exposed to the Sun. J.

the mangaris (membatu) seems like it will take a beating the merantie (Phil. Mohagany seems like splinters I'll pop up all over, and appearently it don't do well under 18" and closed areas, the batu says under 12" samething, then again I have read that about ipe also and all 9 ipe decks I built with hidden fastner is in good condition
