LV Wire Routing In Cedar Rails

Matt and I were going back and forth on how to do it cleanly and here's how I did it.

It wasn't impossible, but it took some forethought as to where the holes would go so they'd be hidden by the railing parts.

Came out pretty well...I think.

Dennis,

That right there is the joy of using a sub. I don't know why he didn't just butt the two girders.

You can only get so much done by your lonesome.

Some people just do not have good taste, he probably thought it would look better like that.

The lights look good and that seems like the best way to route them.

Man thats a nice job I am loving the steel rail detail total Clean.

I am just old school with ell I still run condut no matter what it takes even low voltage. But thats just me. Sometimes it takes a lot of snot lube but I just cant see the Wallet going with all that money without it. Latley I have been wrapping most all my posts anyway so that helps. J.

Re: LV Wire Routing In Cedar Rails

I've run LV wires thru round deckorator balusters before on an ipe deck. I'd put the wire in the center baluster so the light would be mounted on the top 2x4 rail. It worked ok I guess, at least the customer liked, but I kinda remember it being a pita.

If I ever do it again I'll do it behind a board on the post wraps, seems easier.

Oh...he framed it top down for some reason and used that to brace the girder. I forgot to pull it off.

Thanks for reminding me.

Gutters have to be redone because the leaders are in the way of the new doors next to the chimney.

Picture 4 looks clumpy. Ace connectors are best for that situation. BTW where do you buy your kings Lowes? If so you might be overpaying.

But pretty innovative for running the wires. But we always go right down the post. I hate the look of guys who rabbit a groove. Always always auger down the middle.

Do you have an electrical license?

Looks good man, like the decking, might have routered the 4" step though. It looks tight so it wouldnt chip out. Nicely done Greg.

Aww, c'mon!

Showing off your work is the easiest way to prove you know what you're talking about.

Lots of buried nails in that edge.

Funny thing...The existing deck was solid stained and it sure looked like cedar to me when I met with the people, so I spec'd #2 cedar on the extension we built to match.

HO calls in a floor refinishing guy to get the old deck boards back and lo and behold, the boards were PT!

Initially, the game plan was to reskin the old deck with TT and build the extension. Husband wanted TT, wife wanted wood. I stayed out of it. When they told me they wanted wood, it was much less expensive, so I upsold them on the square balusters and LV.

Re: LV Wire Routing In Cedar Rails

I guess you cant upload pics on here.... maybe I will put a few on webshots later.

Btw I dont have to many deck lighting pictures. I will have to start taking more. Problem is most of my decks are lit from 20-40 feet up. So fixtures are not visible.
