Looking For PVC/vinyl/aluminum Handrail-reasonably Priced
Called for a final on a deck we did using the Quick Rail railing system that we've used for years with no trouble. This afternoon inspector calls up and says everything is great but he will not sign final until proper handrail is installed. I guess in 1 month they've changed their rules and now the top rail can only be 1.5-2" wide for grasping purposes, this newly desinged Quick Rail is 2 3/4" so I have to add a code approved rail from newel post to newel post. My supplier contacted quick Rail on this since this is the first they'd heard about this not being code compliant, QR told supplier this is BS and I should fight it tooth and nail since they just changed over design to meet national building coeds nation wide and would have their engineer fax over all the info I need to try and fight the city on this issue.
Either way I told my supplier it's not upto national code, since each city can modify codes/rules as they see fit so I'd just be wasint my breath trying to "fight the power" LOL!! THIS is what I'm looking for, just wondering if there's something more reasonably priced you guys have seen/used. |

Josh, here is the link to find dealers in your area on the Fairway Vinyl website. Shows 8 folks up to 56 miles away.
This is the locator for Kroybp, another manufacturer. Hope these help out some. We've never used this type of product, but it looks very interesting.

Re: Looking For PVC/vinyl/aluminum Handrail-reasonably Priced
I always build a graspable handrail out of the composite I use to build the deck. Then I tell the homeowners that they own the house and whatever they do with it after final is their business... I have had 2 out of the last 10 keep the handrail on it after final inspection.

Re: Looking For PVC/vinyl/aluminum Handrail-reasonably Priced
Double A, thanks for the link, I looked up a local dealer and the most expensive lumber yeard in teh surrounding area is one of them LOL!! Either way I took a printed copy of what I'm looking for into my main supplier (menards) and told them this is what I need so they're on it and will hopefully produce, if not, then at least I have a place in town I can price it out through them
Robert: I've done the same thing many times, inform homie we need to do this to pass final and after they sign off and leave, what YOU do is your choice. It just makes me mad since I've used this exact system for years, never had any troubles with it to date and now, boom, it's not going to work. I know they're local codes so I cannot say I was'nt informed, but in 4 yrs of using this stuff have never had an inspector raise any concerns...even in the town I'm talking about now. |

Re: Looking For PVC/vinyl/aluminum Handrail-reasonably Priced
Just install a basic (interior) 'grippable' handrail and paint it exterior latex white. I do it all the time.

Re: Looking For PVC/vinyl/aluminum Handrail-reasonably Priced
Tom: great idea and in your example it looks very nice, but these folsk spent alot of money on making this thing as maintenance free as possible and I dont want to put on a hadrail that will require paint after years of exposure...kind of defeats homies pocket book expense of not doing anything but pwr washing "until they die" as it was put LOL!!
Would definately be cheap and easy though, but would be like the black sheep of the project since it's not forever impervious to weather like the rest of it is. |
